I saw Saved the other night, and for those of you going on about how offensive it is without having seen it, really need to calm down. It is certainly not making fun of Christianity as a whole, but poking fun of people who become so engrained in their religion that they let they use it to justify anything that they do. While I can see some sonservative baptists being a bit uneasy about the movie, as it does mainly satirize them, other groups like Catholics (who in my experience don't act anything like young conservative baptists) really have nothing to complain about here.
*SPOILER*
Brief overview:
1. Very conservative Christian girl sleeps with gay boyfriend to try and make him straight. She is too afraid to ask for any real help from anyone because she's afraid that her friend's and family's religious beliefs will cause them to take her boyfriend away. Instead, she comes up with a very dumb idea to make him straight, and justifies it using her religious belief that Jesus will make her a virgin again b/c she's trying to save her boyfriend.
2. Girl get's pregnant and boyfriend is outted and taken away to get "cured". Girl gets mad at god for breaking the promise that they had and pretty much loses all her faith.
3. Girl associates with the less desireable people (who of course turn out to be good people, just different) at the school and loses her friends. Her friends become obssessed with saving her. The girl also gets angry at her old friends and sees them as close minded and really b*tchy. They fight back and forth, each doing things that aren't very nice.
4. Girl's ex-friend steps over the line and frames her for a crime getting the girl and her new friends expelled, and in the meantime exposing that she is pregnant.
5. Girl's mom begrudginly agrees with the principal of the school to send her away to get "help", girl doesn't want to go.
6. Girl exposes that she was framed at the prom, her ex-boyfriend escapes from the place he was getting "cured" at and also attends the prom with his boyfriend.
7. Big scene at the prom, big long speech about how you can't just send people away when they don't agree with you, we all make mistakes, nobody is perfect, you still have to love people in spite of any flaws they may have, etc, etc...
8. Girl has baby. Gains her faith back, but is now has a much more liberal view of the world. (paraphrased) "As I looked into my baby's eyes, I couldn't help but think how beautiful he is and that God must love me."
Really, only the most conservative christian will find anything offensive about this movie.
