If you wish to use a scripture detailing how people cannot be sancitified through their own works to try and make a point here you have much to learn.

Matt 12:43-45 is a parable, explaining that under our own strength we may be able to put aside sin for a short period but it will come back stronger than before because sin has not been defeated. It is only defeated through Christ.

Really Pete, it is highly unusual for a Christian to claim the devil does not exist. Scripture is quite clear on this point, it is not a metaphor for our own sinfulness, there is a real Devil named Satan and not just a personal devil reflecting our own sinful selfish will desires and uncleaness. Read Revelations 12:7-12

"And war broke out in heaven: Micheal and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world, he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, 'Now salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has but a short time."

I don't believe this to be a mere metaphor. Dinosaurs are real and they are the inspiration for dragons. perhaps in the dawn of time before God created humans Satan did have the form of a mighty dragon in heaven and he fought with God's angels and rebeled against God. A lot of creatures considered "mythological" have real animals that are the basic inspiration that look a lot like the legendary version. Dinsoaurs, crocodiles, flying lizards-dragons, gazelles, antelope horse-unicorns, golden pheasant-phoenix, dragonflies, fireflies, butterflies-fairies, etc.

For some greater understanding of that quote from Revelation, read Numbers 16.

Scripture is quite clear, unfortunatley men have clouded that meaning with their own understandings. If this devil called Satan was such an integral part of the universe, would it not make sense that the bible would make the presence of such a being manifestly clear and the teachings of God from Genesis to Rev would clearly reflect this? As it stands, people use scriptures out of context, read extra meanings into passages, ignore language and translation, create creatures in certain passages to fit their beliefs and so on.

Rev 1:1 is very clear when is says that what John was to be shown were signs, not a narrative. Prophetic language has a key so that we may gain an understanding. Unfortunately few take the time to seek, let along learn it.
