India had been one of the most stubborn consumers of cheap Iranian crude. However, it's being reported that even India has completely stopped it's purchases from Iran and is instead buying more US and Saudi oil. It's not just the current administration. I remember Secretary Clinton under President Obama coaxing India to cut Iranian imports.

To be clear, China is still defying US sanctions.

If a recalcitrant nation like India changed its ways, does that mean sanctions are working? Was the President right all along? If he is, are sanctions a peaceful resolution to the Iran situation? All are free to discuss.

Iran is an ancient nation not an invented dream country of colonialists. People are patriotic and will defend their country. Just like Russia.

All the sanctions will do is to make people suffer and blame mainly the US for it. They will gird themselves, probably get bit more xenophopic and religious in general while strengthening the extremist views.

I found some interesting facts about Iran. Although it was never colonized by European powers, the colonial era British-India company did establish monopoly over tobacco trade in Iran. Later, England established exclusive rights to prospect for oil in Iran via the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. That led to various coups and probably explains Iran's general hatred and mistrust of the west. So, I don't think Iran was completely immune to colonization like most of us (India, US, etc.).

    Here's an interesting piece:
The long history of Iranian distrust of the West

I did notice that Iran trolled president Trump recently. So there is definitely some harsh feelings there: They chant death to USA?

How renewed US sanctions have hit Iran hard

TLDR ; when the sanctions were lifted they had GDP growth of 12% when Trump put them back (by uniliterally breaking the treaty) they now have GDP of around - 4%

No wonder they are chanting. What would US citizens do in the similiar situation ? Overthrow their own government or hate hose who actually imposed the sanctions on them ?

Would they cave in just because of pressure ? Or would it become a matter of principle ?

US does not have the will to go to war, nor does it have an effective way to resolve the situation without huge loss of face that Trump is quite allergic to.

Well considering China and Russia have undermined the USA's nation security, and we have yet to go to war with them. I'm not sure then how that comment is valid.

Have undermined USA national security ? Are you kidding ? We are talking about a nation here that actually got their first democratically elected government overthrown by the CIA and you have nerve to take moral highground because "they have undermined US national security " Whatever that means.

I was talking about Snowden and hacking thefts by China and Russia. Happens all the time. No war. I would not even attempt to justify a statement from Iran that says "Death to the USA" since it sounds like a terrorist stance to me. Isn't that what terrorists say.

Guess it depends on your definition. Is Trump terrorist or not ?

edit : I would personally just call it propaganda and bluster and save terrorism for actual acts of terror.

I'm not sure. How do you define him as a terrorist?

P.S. I watched the video, which is in regard to North Korea. A country that kills it's own leadership staff whenever the wind blows the wrong way. Not sure why you're defending them?

You see a great difference from someone calling "Death to America" to someone saying their nation will face "Fire and fury like the world has never seen before"

I am not. However terrorists threatening people I do not approve of does not make them any less terrorist if we go by your earlier definition.

Well lets see, Iran shot down a US drone over international waters and then called our president an idiot, while north Korea displayed pictures of the US with nuclear bombs killing us not to mention other threatening behavior like sending nuclear warheads over Japan sending off Mayday sirens and terrifying Japan. Maybe Trump was justified in his remarks? It looks like it to me.

Shot a drone down ? Justified in his remarks ? USA overturned Iran`s democratically elected government in a CIA coup

    1953 Iranian coup d'├ętat - Wikipedia

installed a dictator positive to US interests and afterwards helped to train their brutal internal police

"After the 1953 coup, the Shah's government formed the SAVAK (secret police), many of whose agents were trained in the United States. The SAVAK monitored dissidents, and carried out censorship. After the 1971 Siahkal Incident, it was given a "loose leash" to torture suspected dissidents with "brute force" that, over the years, "increased dramatically", and nearly 100 people were executed for political reasons during the last 20 years of the Shah's rule.[144][147]"

Maybe there is some justification for their hatred as well ? Also instead of letting their democracy movement gather power you have made them to be seen as traitors and quislings driving American agenda, strengthened the extremist forces and blew some air to all those all hatreds while trying to starve them economically.

That actually sounds pretty much like terrorism to me.

Thanks I wasn't aware of that. Actually I was more concerned about the chant for death to the USA as a sign of terrorism. Which is a morally corrupt and terrible evil.

Not so much CIA and British operations that eventually got overthrown. Non of which Trump was involved in BTW.

Back to the OP, yes I think sanctions are a peaceful attempt at a resolution. Definitely not an act of terrorism on Trumps behalf.

It has a lots of history going with it from the revolution when your puppet dictator was overthrown in turn.

    Death to America - Wikipedia

This is the 40th anniversay of the event.

It could have been just another low key event from the history with internationally more connected Iran with less strict religious society and growing democratic forces.

Now you have turned it into a rallying cry for terrorists, hardliners and extremisists while impoverishing the nation and creating perfect breeding ground for the next generation of fanatics. Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.

And all of this so Trump could try undo everything that Obama managed to get done. How petty is that. How futile.

So are you suggesting Iran should be rewarded for downing a drone over international waters and insulting our president? Noticing that they also blew up 2 oil tankers: 'They want to hit where it hurts': Here's why Iran could want to attack foreign tankers

Trump started this confontration. All of those actions stem from the US uniliterally tearing their own agreements up and starting an embargo. Also it is far from proven that Iran did any of those acts. There is plenty of other actors around. You do not seriously think that the White House narrative is always the truth ?

Not saying Iranians did not do anything but you have to be pretty ignorant and naive if you are sure you know the players here.

You might ask yourself what will Iran gain from starting a war they are sure to lose ?
