What is done and not done on the Sabbath?
On the Sabbath, Adventists rest from our everyday work and take a whole day to focus on our relationship with God and our relationships with other people. I think you'll find that many Adventists disagree about whether certain specific activities should be restricted on Sabbath. I believe that we should leave those decisions between a person and God. The principles behind Sabbath-keeping are the same principles behind all of the other commandments: love for God and love for our neighbors. The Sabbath is meant to be a joyful experience of spending time with God, not a bunch of legalistic dos and don'ts.
Curious...The idea is that the sabbath is a day dedicated to the Lord. When you fall in the love with a person and set a date with him, you will not do your normal chores during that time, right?
The rule is very simple: do only those things that are necessary to be done on Sabbath. For everything else, do them on the other days.
But how do SDA's keep the Sabbath HOLY in the way it was commanded to Israel? In different parts of the globe different things are or seem to be acceptable to that group of SDA's.
We do not play sport on Sabbath here. I have heard that in parts of Europe that they do play around with sports on Sabbath afternoon.
Of that is true then I do not agree with it.
Then there is the issue of getting "wet" (swimming).
I do not but some do. I can see where the problem is with that.
I will go out into nature and take the kids for a walk which is harder work that going to the beach and going for a swim.
It is not a matter of what you can do or not do but it is your relationship to Jeuss Christ that counts.
When that is right the rest will fall into place.
But how do SDA's keep the Sabbath HOLY in the way it was commanded to Israel?
If you are referring to some of the 610 laws they were very restrictive and I don't think there are any Adventist keeping the Sabbath that way now. Clearly this was not the way it was supposed to be kept or Christ wouldn't have violated some of these rules when He was here on earth. If you look at the incidences of the death penalty being inacted for breaking the Sabbath it was in violation of clear instructions from Moses as to what was expected at that time. I think Christ is our best example for the way the Sabbath is to be kept. He went about doing good on the Sabbath and His custom was to go and worship in the synagog ( church ). Since we know Christ never sinned then we have to evaluate the way we see and apply the laws given to Israel pertaining to the Sabbath.
God Bless
