S. Carolina bill would allow state employees to choose either Juneteenth or Confederate Memorial Day

Separate holidays will surely unify the people of the great state of South Carolina.

While it was given special recognition in 2008, Juneteenth is not an official state holiday in South Carolina.

Shealy supports the legislation but said the main concern some members of [the GOP] caucus might have is approving another day off for state employees.

“I think the main concern is not the holiday itself, we already have so many state holidays we are adding another state holiday,” she said.

Shealy said removing Confederate Memorial Day [which is a state holiday] is not an option for her as it is important to give people who have relatives who fought for the Confederacy a day to remember their ancestors.

So in a spirit of bipartisanship, the two days will be either/or for state employees if this passes.

There is no suggestion about why they'd choose one or the other, but each new paid-leave holiday costs the taxpayers and citizens in tax monies and loss of the availability of the relevant governmental services.

Apparently, the idea was not to cancel anyone's holiday but just to accommodate as many employees as possible without running up the expense that comes with paying them for not working.

Confederate Memorial Day? In the national cemetery in my city, there are many rows of unknown soldiers, some union and some Confederate. Why can't we celebrate all deceased soldiers in one day--including those who were led astray? After all, their families were repatriated

This is almost as bad as the people in my town who celebrate Robert E Lee's birthday instead of MLK's.

The county I worked for rolled Lincoln's Birthday into George Washington's and renamed it Presidents' Day in exchange for the day after Thanksgiving. It's understandable and a good business decision since a lot of people would take it off anyway and the ones who came in barely worked at all that day. But that is always a Friday, while Boxing Day could fall on any day of the week.

In my state we get a day off for a horse race and another one for a football game, and the best thing about the latter is we get a Friday off for a game played on a Saturday.

However, I can imagine the contention if we were forced to an either or, horses or footballs.
