  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Woohoo!! That's awesome ed_m! Congratulations! You must be incredibly sore right now.

Yeah, I'm usually affected by what I eat before a run. Last Friday night I went on a junk food binge and when I went for a run on Saturday morning I had the worse run of my life. The weekends are usually my longer runs and but I couldn't even make the half hour mark! :sigh: Now I've learned my lesson and I'm back to being the health-conscious freak that I am. :)

Wow, Ed, great run!

And here I think I'm doing great running 15 miles a week, 5 miles at a time. My latest fastest mile is 8:30, but I can't sustain it yet, as you can. That's awesome!

P.S. Where'd the "age bit" go? I left it with the cane and other assorted geriatric equipment you seemed to think I needed! Honestly Ed, everyone is challenged when it comes to running, not just "old folks." Don't look at my age and assume you know a lot about me. You don't.

I love running, but since I'm just starting out again for the first time in 2 years, I'm horribly out of shape and it's hard to breath and my side starts to hurt. How do I get around that?

Also, the only place to run around here is around the streets and stuff, but I'm a shy person and hate running in front of people! I wish I didn't feel that way!

err :help: .. i need a smiley in there to work out if i've mortally offended you.
apologies again if so

nessie:
it just takes time! take it easy, throw in some walking breaks, make sure you get time to recover between runs and build up distance/time gradually.

luckily for me i've never been particularly self concious about my running but i am moderately shy. just remember you're doing it for yourself and _they_ can think what they like! chances are _they_ don't even notice you and so don't think anything!

Nessie, I used to be like that.....overly conscious about running around in my neighborhood, however the more I did it, the less I cared. I don't think about it anymore. And the more running you do, the less self-conscious you'll become. :)

Go to a marathon and check out the average age of the runners! I wonder what the average age of the runners in the Boston Marathon is? Any runs I go to (to run or watch) has many, many people over 40, 50, 60 and even 70!
Hey Ariel, you may get so fast that you will need that cane to knock people out of your way! Carry on running so fast! God Bless, J

Okay, Ed, here's your smiley face: :)

Fitmom, thanks for the encouragement! You have helped me so much time and time again!

I really feel great this morning. My gym started a runner's club, and I just got back from our first group run together. We did 4 miles, no walks, no breaks, and I was able to keep up just fine. :) :) :)

ugh I hate running...but I really try to like it...HOW DO I GET TO LIKE IT?! haha...is it possible?

I want to work on my speed because I play softball and always feel like I'm way too slow...sprints will help that I believe but I also want to run long distance...never had the drive though I guess?

running AND cycling fitmom?.... sounds hopeful..... triathlon? :D

That is what I tell her! She is not a fan of swimming, she can swim though. So I tell her that all tri -athletes have strengths and areas to improve, just like we all do, everday and in all apects of life! J

getting faster isn't really easy, i don't enjoy speed sessions a great deal, but they can deliver the goods if done right.
distance i find much more relaxing, the running bit is almost subconcious, just let your brain unwind itself! so long as you're relaxed, building up slowly and running within your ability (which will improve!) you should start to feel the benefit.
i need a specific goal (which i always have these days) to generate any kind of drive, which you need to get out of bed before 6 for a long run!

fitmom:
2 years ago i went along to our club swim sessions and could barely drag myself 25m (the coach was worried i wouldnt make it back from the other end!). that was september, the following march i did my first triathlon. i hate swimming, always have, still do, have a phobia of water... but i know i can do it now so there's hope for anyone! (especially a nipper)

it is so true! I have clients who have recently done their first 'mini-tri' called See Jane Go! Anyway, all tri-athletes have an area to work on more than others. This race was in June and one of the girls just learned to swim in January! She took an adult learn to swim class. At the race she was 2nd last out of the pool, but she swam the entire thing, her strength is in running. My other client was 2nd out of the pool, she is an awesome swimmer, and she just started running in June! GO GIRLS GO!
