  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Silicon is great for breaks, too, as well as tears in cartilage and ligaments! The right form heals broken bones in half the time or better. Once it even amazed me when a broken leg bone healed in only 1 week with the right form and amount of silicon!

An Ironman is a distant goal, but probably after I'm 40 and after I've completed quite a few marathons, regular triathlons. I'm trying to make up for the abuse I put my body through when I was younger. Some I won't be able to, but, perhaps with some patience, learning, time, determination, faithful to eating healthy for my body, bodyfat loss, increasing my endurance, etc., I'll one day be able to an Ironman.

You know it's bad when your temp. lows are in the 90s (not there yet, but I expect within the next few weeks...uggh). I love AZ in the Fall-Spring, but I do dislike our summers....miserably hot. I'll take this heat, though, to shoveling snow or living in a shack for 1/2 million dollars. If you're so inclined to train in hot weather, you're welcome to come over here ANYTIME Jun-Sep.

Yeah, I do take a more sensible approach now to health, as my hubby and children don't like me when I'm obsessed with stuff (also, hinders my relationship with God). I can't wait to start back up running in a few months. Sometimes when I'm on the treadmill, I just want to kick up the speed and start running, but my body's not through healing yet. :)

I'd much rather run than jump on a trampoline. However, to each their own.

Hey, I didn't know we had a running thread!

Yes, I'm running. I've been breaking into it slowly since April. I've gotten great advice along the way--not too push too hard too fast, get good running shoes, etc. The lastest suggestion from a runner at my gym was to buy "Galloway's Book on Running." I've just started reading it--it looks great.

This morning I ran 3.4 miles in 32 minutes. I have no idea where I going with this. I just like to run.

so what have we all been up to ?
LOL! ed_m needs to get out more if he's bord! ;)

I'm up to running 3 miles in 27 minutes and am starting to train for the Jefferson Hospital distance run this fall in Philly - it's a half marathon. Also will be running the 5K Komen race for Breast Cancer this fall in NYC.

Komen is big supporter of Planned Parenthood and that means abortion and that means breast cancer.

The #1 way to prevent breast cancer is 200 micrograms daily (at LEAST) of selenium daily. Oh, and DON'T get cancer CAUSING mammograms. Thermography is safe and efficient.

Komen won't teach you any of that.

Oh, wait, you did write "Komen race FOR Breast Cancer" rather than "Komen race AGAINST Breast Cancer".

Never mind.

ariel well i kept trying to get this thread going :) jeff galloway is highly regarded, in fact i think i might have been following one of his schedules earleir in the year.
glad to hear you're still at it seraph.

my fave running book at the moment is 'the lore of running' by tim noakes.. quite a tome but a very useful reference for physiology, injury and training and racing at all levels.

I'm going to look for that book. Thanks for the tip.

Here's a question: When learning to run, as I am, is it more important to develop speed or endurance? That is, should I aim more to run for longer periods of time? Or should I concentrate on getting faster?

Right now I'm running somewhere around 30 minutes at a time, doing a little more than 3 miles in that 30 minutes. I'm not sure whether to stay at that 30 minutes and try to run faster, or to run for a longer period of time, staying at about a 9:40 or 9:20 minute mile.

general rule is to train for distance first and then speed..... i.e. build up the distance you want and then put some speed work in to improve your time.

depends on your aims i guess... but bear in mind speed work puts quite a strain on the body and needs plenty of recovery afterwards... especially for the _ahem_ older runner :D

(incidentally i did a 23mile fell (mountain) race last month, about half way i passed a couple of ladies running along and had a little chat... one of them was 56! much respect!)

cool thread. I love running. I run by minutes, not miles. I do this because I usually run on streets or nature paths. If I do go to a track, I try to run a mile as fast as I can. (which isnt all that fast)

I only run for one express reason...to pass the physical agility test for Law Enforcement. :) Naw...I actually do enjoy it, but I wouldn't do it if I didn't have this motivation. I more sprint train, going about 3 miles, and "try" to get out every other day. I incorporate strength training into my workout also.

totally selfish resurrection of this thread...

tomorrow at 6am BST i'll be starting the 50mile challenge.... so funnel your positive vibes, prayers and thoughts in my direction (http://www.50milechallenge.co.uk/).
the cut off time is 15hrs with certificates & opportunity to drop out at intermediate distances.
last years best individual time was 8hrs18mins, i hope to be under 9hrs but i'm not too worried about time (the crazy thing is this is just training for a longer race with tougher time limits later in the year!)

so whenever, wherever and however far you're going this weekend.... take it easy :)
