I have a half marathon a week from today. It will be my first half since 2011 and frankly, I'm undertrained for it. So no PR, but no stress about it either. I'm still trying to decide on a goal race and distance for this year.

Good luck at your half! Hope it goes well and is lots of fun!

I've started adding some running into my walking~~it was a fairly fast paced walk...no sore knees yet, I credit that to the regular Solgar Glucosamine/Chondrotin I've been taking for the past 9 months...getting crazy thoughts of running a 5K...

The style of running you do depends on the kind of body you are aiming for, for example long distance running is going to make you very skinny (like Mo Farah)

However if you are going for a more muscular look you should do short sprints (see the difference in body shape from 100m sprinters like Bolt to a long distance runners like Mo Farah) sprints build speed and power.

5-8 minute workouts should do the trick, do your sprints in sets as so you where weight lifting. Warm up then do 30 seconds sprinting at top speed, 30 seconds rest, repeat for 5-8 mins (build up over time from 5 to 8 mins) this is called HIIT training, look into it if you are interested.

I was doing something like this last summer and have been trying to get back into it this year. I'll go to the local middle school and run at their track - I do about 1.5 miles (6 laps) of regular running, then walk a lap, then do a series of 100m sprints. Generally, I'll sprint the front and back stretches and walk the curved parts of the track.

If the track is in use, and/or I feel like running in grass, I'll go over to the soccer field and run the same distance, but instead of straight sprints, I'll do soccer drills like suicides, backwards running, and sideways crossovers. My abs last summer were pretty nice, but winter donuts took that away...

I'm a runner, because it keeps me in good shape. I don't run for sport or leisure. This is a good topic. Do you feel more motivated to run at certain hours of the day?

I don't really have many options other than hitting the tarmac, so I'd rather do it early in the morning before most people are awake than try to dodge commuters. Plus I love running while the dawn chorus is peaking, even in the middle of a city it's beautiful.

I also quite like night running, but I don't do that here. There's a difference between believing God will protect you, and deliberately tempting fate just because night time is a lovely time to run.
