There are HUGE similarities between Rome and America.

1. The Roman military was the most advanced of its day. No power on earth at the time equaled Rome in military might and numbers. They had the best equipment, the best training, and the best losses/wins record.

2. Rome took sports VERY seriously. They built the largest venue to sports and entertainment of the ancient world

3. Countless Roman laws are still laws today in America

4. The Roman language gave us many of our own words and still defines the scientific community.

5. The Roman atitude towards other countries was rather pragmatic, they kissed ass when they wanted something they couldnt take.

6. The Romans stressed infrastructure in thier cities very heavily

You could go on for HOURS listing similarities, so overall, I would say yes, we are the new Rome

Never in the history of the world has a nation that has taken their enemy came in and fed its peoples and rebuilt its economy.
When the Crusaders took (And incidentally sacked) Jerusalem, the Muslim leader Saladin siezed it back but did not kill the Christians who were left behind nor did he take revenge on the city for not rising up against the Christians.

MANY nations have been invaded and not destroyed by the invader. Especially if the invasion was economically motivated.

Many lives have been lost to these regiems because of our slackness.
Who appointed the US to be World Cop? We cant even take care of our old people or educate our kids. We should focus on fixing our own damn roof before we go help someone with a leaky faucet

Oh If you still think that this was the character of ancient Rome? Then you need to visit Massadah. Jerusalem was in ruin for generations before its people recoverd enough to rebuild it without Rome's blessing. Infact it was way into the 20th century before Jerusalem even had a sustainable economy.
Better yet, take a look at the accounts of the Crusaders who sacked Jerusalem. "If you want to know what was done to the inhabitants of the city when we breached her walls, know this. Our men rode in the blood of our enimies up to the knees of thier horses" -Letter from a Crusader

as society declined, the people blamed that decline on the Christians . . . . sound familiar at all??
Roman society declined for a number of reasons. The Persians and barbarian tribes raided the land. Corruption riddled the capitol, there was no money to raise more troops. People make a big ruckus over the persecution of Christians by Pagan Rome, but in truth, very few Christians were actually killed just for being Christian.

ROme got lazy and paid people to fight for them.
Incorrect. Rome was not lazy by any stretch of the immagination. Towards the end of the Empire, there was little money, certainly not enough to pay for military assistance from anywhere. The Roman military machine was very impressive. They had the strongest army on earth for a considerable strech of time. While they were not un-defeated(Such as the massacre of Quintillius Varus and three legions in the Teutoborg forrest), the ammount of victories clearly showed that Rome was more than willing and able to defend herself.

The US has a nasty dependence on the lower classes and recent immigrants for recruitment. Rome depended on the Barbarians which flooded the empire towards the end of her existence.

The key problem with Roman forces was the moral or lack thereof. If some liberals have their way, America will soon be that way as well. :(

The problem wasnt morale. It was a combination of shoddy command mixed with over-work. There were numerous invaders and the Roman armies simply couldnt handle the number of invaders. The Roman command structure was falling appart due to corruption. A politician would get elected with the support of certain people who wanted political positions. The politician would get elected then appoint his supporters to thier desired positions, ousting people with ability. This produced a whole political structure of greedy, self-interested people who didnt care at all (Or very little) about Rome or her empire and who had no ability.

It appears that most people here agree that America had many aspects in common with Rome. I am wondering do any of you think that America is on the verge of falling like Rome did (say in the next 50 years) or do you believe that it is going to stick around for awhile?

Rome was also an evil people
**Gags on his sandwich** ExSCUSE me? My friend, without Rome, MUCH of what YOU know today would not be here. INCLUDING Christianity. The Romans were no better or worse than anyone else.

we're not evil.
Oh really? Did you know that we are the ONLY country to have ever used nuclear weapons? We dropped nuclear bombs on cities, killing millions of people. We dropped firebombs on Japanese cities, burning tens of thousands of innocent people alive. We let our soldiers abuse our prisoners of war while people at home display signs that say "Die Ragheads Die". Noooo were not evil in the LEAST
We help nations in trouble
Yeeeaahhhh...and we've been doing SUCH a great job with that http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/04/09/iraq.main/index.html

Look at Israel we help them. And I mean help alot!!!
And you dont think that the help we give them could possibly go to an African nation where everyone is starving to death and the GNP is about a hundred bucks?

the roman empire did not fall over night and even when the west fell to the barbarians, the roman empire lived on. The last vestages of the empire were not eliminated until the middle of the 15th century. Fracture before a fall.

Take everything you know about Rome, the good, the bad, the ugly, the obese, glistening fatty chins of the most powerful elite Caesers, the military power, everything.

Now multiply that by about a million and you've got America.
How do you figgure?

I highly doubt that the United States will last forever. Even if the United States had nothing at all in common with Rome it would still fall. Every empire that has ever existed has fallen- Greece, Rome, Britian, The Soviet Union- they all fell. Nothing can last forever, it is just they cycle of history. The only exception of this would be if Christ came back before it fell. But even if he did it would not be because the United States is so great, but because it is his appointed time.

I agree that the attacks were necessary to end the war, but it was NOT necessary to drop them on cities. An empty stretch of land or mountain would have been equally impressive. Rather than shooting them in the head, shoot the ground next to them and say "Do it or the next one flies at your skull." We didnt NEED to nuke the cities, we WANTED to. We DID need to use nukes, but not on civilian targets, innocent people

America has been on a steady DECLINE for decades now. They're really going down fast now that Bush is in his second term. The harder they close their fist the more slip through their fingers.

Here's a few things to tell us we are in the last days - A united Europe, the rise of China, the war on terrorism, Iraq [Babylon] has fallen, Strife in Israel being healed (the withdraw from Gaza is a good starting point there), a dead pontif, the "culture of life" and just general continuation of accelerated globalism/population growth.

Oh, and also there is a spiritual collective consciousness that is awakening now unlike never before.

Sorry if that was a little off topic, guys.

America is not an Empire. :) Not now, nor ever have we been an empire.
