Another view which is more Pauline...

Paul believed that sin was the opposite of God. The battle was not against Satan, but against sin. He attributes sin life like qualities throughout his writings. "Sin worked in me", "Sin became alive", and "Sin was revived".

If you understand that Sin is anathema to God, and that Sin is dead without God's command, then it is the law that transfers life to sin.

Adam and Eve did not conspire with sin because they ate the fruit, but because they disobeyed the command of God. In disobediance, they choose sin over God because it was found to make one wise.

When we disobey the commands of God, we are transferring life from ourselves to sin. Sin becomes alive, and we become dead. Therefore, it is not us who exists anymore before a Holy God, but sin.

However, sin reigns in our flesh. This sin is dormant within us because we have not granted it life at a young age, but the flesh still contains sin.

We are still children of sin because our parents procreated us in their image. We produce after our kind just as God decreed in Genesis. When Adam and Eve took on the image of sin, they passed that sin on to each of us through procreation. However, they also passed life on to us (we are a living soul).

For I was alive without the law once

Because I did not have the comprehension to grant sin my life, I remained alive. This is why David believed that he would see the son that God took from him when he died. He believed that God had granted him life, and that sin did not have any of the child’s life. This is the predicate grace of God that existed since the beginning of time.

The point of Romans is that because of Jesus, where sin abounds, grace abounds more.

but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died

Note the balance. Sin revived. I died. Sin lives, I die. This is the exchange that we had prior to Christ. The only way to gain life back was to take the life of an innocent being (bull, lamb, dove, etc.) and place that life back to our credit.

But Jesus’ sacrifice paid the life debt for all. So now we can live through him and sin has no power over us any more.

Thanks be to God. (Bible passages available upon request for the sake of time.)
