  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ah, yes. The Time of Trial heroes have a lot of issues to work out... one of them feels the call of the dark side (okay, his own harebrained idea to infiltrate the baddies), and another of them is an absolute joke emotionally. (Isliel's aforementioned fiance...) He also has absolutely NO discernment about people, which is very bad for a wannabe cleric! Wise, yet stupid. Or would that be smart, but lacking in wisdom? Hmmmm... the latter if it was D&D.

Heheheheheh... psychoanalyze a villain to death! ROFL! Sic Freud on 'em!!!

Well, I have no qualifications to make any real comments about RP, but I am writing a fiction book, so I have a deal of knowledge on character creation and good ways to give them depth.

Basically, a good character must have three essential qualities: personality, a goal, and motivation. Personality(both good and bad traits), because everyone has one and it defines the character's behavior. A goal(which can and likely will change as time progresses), because it give the character a way to advance his motivation. Motivation(which is generally the same throughout), because it answers why the character does what he does. There are other finer details, but these I'd say are the essential basics.

For example, Shandrey, a character from my book, which can also be seen in The Last Journey, has his personality revealed right away; secretive, straight forward, quiet. Later, as the story progresses, his goals become revealed. Only after a series of goals come along (between half and 3/4th the way through the book) can his true motivations be seen.

One of the best ways to reveal a character's motivation is to make him do something unexpected or something not in line with his personality. I.E. Have the villain save the character he's trying to kill, or have a trustworthy hero suddenly vanish in the heat of battle.

Again, I have book writing experience, where I decide everything that happens. The rules are slightly different in RP, as I'm learning slowly, since you're have to work with other characters trying to accomplish their goals. But generally, you have to know which way you want to take a character before you can really give them any depth. And then just roll with the punches when plot twists come along.
Hope that helps anyone who needs it,
God Bless,

No, I did not copy your name, Shadow. I've had this name for almost three or four years now, just not here. If it will help you believe me, I will tell you how I came about it.
The shadow part is a reference to my favorite superhero, The Shadow. "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows."
The s is simple to make it possessive, but without the apostrophe, since most screen-names won't accept apostrophes.
The eldil part is due to the fact that two of the pastors in my church were uncomfortable with my old name of Shadowsdrake. They fell that I shouldn't be making references to a dragons since Satan is called a dragon, ect. Since they both felt that way, I figured they must be on to something, and for the sake of caution, I decided to change it. At the time, I was re-reading C.S. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet. That's where I got the idea for eldil. An eldil is what Lewis calls angels in this book. So instead of being a dragon, I became an angel .
And that is how I came about my name. I'm sorry you thought I stole your name. No hard feelings, I hope. By-the-by, no one ever said you were not a good writer, and in fact I think you're doing a wonderful job. I just wanted to toss in my two cents for anyone who wanted it.
God Bless,
Shadow's Eldil

It's amazing how no one thinks I'm a good writer when I've been here for four months
I haven't seen anyone say you're not a good writer... and because I haven't seen much of your writing I can't comment on that. However, I don't think writing quality has much to do with time spent here, and 4 months isn't really that long. Don't take it personally if you get some criticism, just accept it and ask what you can do to improve. There's nothing to be ashamed of in admitting that your writing needs improvement, I think everybody can improve their writing no matter who they are or how many books they have published.

Do you want me to have a look at your writing and give you some constructive criticism?

Megachihuahua sucks. No one has seen his writing because he is to embarrased to show it to anyone who is better than him, which is everyone but nOObs. Even newbs are better than him.

(Didn't I have spam on this thread? I was going to eat that)

I have something wrong with my writing, possibley everything. Maybe because I subconsiously write in the style of the book I'm reading. Right now I'm reading Ivanhoe, and I read what I wrote and it looks like it was written by a fourth-rate Walter Scott.

Feedback from more experienced writers is one of the best things for getting better. Hey, I get embarrassed to show people some of the stuff I've written-- I might think that my character names are stupid (and often they're pretty hard to pronounce, LOL) or maybe my writing deals with some touchy issues, or... the list goes on.

Everybody has to start somewhere, though. I've checked out some of my old RPG posts at a Star Wars group that came from about four years ago and can't help noticing a huge difference...
