My husband doesn't have as much difficulty for himself, as his family is Slavonic and grew up in a Carpatho-Rusyn parish, primarily comprised of an Slavic emigrant community. He grew up hearing the Divine Liturgy in Slavonic - though his family eventually moved to a parish that used English instead (for the sake of the kids).

Did you learn it in a bilingual (partial Slavonic) parish as a child? How did you do that? Did you take classes? If not, how did you learn the meaning of the liturgy?

Did you understand the meaning of the words? Did you use a bilingual Liturgy text to learn? Just curious It is a bit foreign to me to have services in two languages. Childhood is the best time to learn a language though, so perhaps it happens naturally?

Yes I understood...it is similar to Russian, which I knew from birth. I guess there are variants depending what region it is used in. I understand Russian/Ukrainian. I am not a convert.

I can just about cope with Ukrainian - but I do use a bilingual text - not on facing pages but side by side on the same page. My GodPapa and I have most of the common Services done this way - I need to prepare the Propers [ changeable parts ] each week as our young Server who is also a chanter finds the font used in the Apostol very difficult to read .

I still use English for some things - the Lord's Prayer , the Symbol of Faith and the Pre-Communion Prayer.

I've tried and tried to learn Ukrainian - I've some vocab but since I normally hear it once a week and often sung , in a less than careful fashion , I still struggle. I can read aloud slowly , like a child - but I can , and it's not transliterated . If only people would be a little more careful with their pronunciation and speak more slowly then I would cope far better.

Believe it or not - I cope with Liturgy in French far more easily since I do understand that and have a reasonably fluency in the language.

I've been to Liturgies where Slavonic is used - the Russian parish here uses all Slavonic - there is NO English used and this is really hard for me - I'll admit to getting lost.

I'm lucky - the new EP Russian Chapel here is using English and is also Julian so they will be seeing me from time to time

Thanks for your input! I remembered that you aren't a convert, so I particularly appreciate your view growing up with it.

I think knowing some Slovak helped with my husband's family understanding Church Slavonic as well. My husband isn't fluent in it though. He mainly knows the verbiage used in prayer books - though it's possible that the prayer book is transliterated Church Slavonic? It's the Carpatho-Rusyn prayer book.
