Let's be honest for a minute... with only a few exceptions, most CCM bands wouldn't make it... but that is not why we listen to them.
The problem with CCM bands is that very few (if any) grew out of grass roots support. A band is promoted by a label, the fans are told that they are good, and there is thus nothing prompting these artists to be original or to hone their craft.
You usually see very little growth in these bands as their careers are driven by the label. The production of these artists range all the way from A to B
The local scene for CCM is a non-existent animal. Obviously, there are fewer CCM bands and fewer fans than in the secular realm. This would explain a smaller local scene, but it does not explain a completely missing one!
Even without local venues, I'd like to see more bands "grow a following" via the internet or indie net-based radio, etc. rather than have bands and artists thrust upon us by execs.
Far too many CCM bands today are pumping out throw-away music... and it all sounds eerily similar. Even within a genre, say Pop music, the secular world offers a wide scope of choices. CCM seems to give us the opposite. CCM seems to offer us bands grouped by genre, but within each genre, the production, writing, instrumentation and everything else seems very pre-planned and according to "formula".
