I agree with nightwing. GL has really lost touch with what makes a good movie. He really embodies the way hollywood as a whole is at this point, they've lost touch with what movie goers really want these day. They think it's a formula which is about 50 years old. Hollywood needs an enima!
I'm not sure whether formulas are to blame for the failure of the two latest movies. The original triology was, of course, very formulaic. There are motifs lifted from westerns, samurai films, serials, pulp, and more and ultimately everything goes back to mythical hero archetypes. Lucas was very aware of all of this when he made those movies.

I think the problem is that the wrong formulas are being used. The question is not "how can we make this resonate most with the audience" or even "how can we make this the most entertaining", because then Hollywood would look to the films and stories that have survived the test of time. The question is instead "how can we make the most money", and the formula to do that is simply "make certain that there is something for everyone." So in episode I we have gungans for the kids, maul for the teenage boys, amidala for teen girls, Jedi and recurring characters for the old fans, light political intrigue for adults, etc. Everyone is mildly satisfied, but no one is deeply touched. But guess what? If you make a movie that everyone believes is mediocure you will make more money than one that a small portion of the population is devoted to. Even more money comes from one that everyone is devoted to, but lets face it, those things are hard and even experts will end up angering a large portion of the audience at least half the time. Far easier to try to make everyone a little entertained, so they all come. It's a sad state of affairs, but it's how the money is made in Hollywood.

The Star Wars movies have always had bad dialogue but thats ok because they are entertaining and the story is good. Star Wars has always been geared toward a younger generation like the Droids, Ewoks and yes even Jar Jar but to kids this is funny. I have enjoyed all of the movies and plan on watching Eppy 3 on opening day so anybody that complains about the last 2 movies thats fine do not go see it.

"you will not disturb my Star Wars moment" <-- little jedi mind trick.
