  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Aww, c'mon! Someone had to ask :D

And Happy New Year, everyone! In London it is now 2009 and I just brought it in in style with some fab fireworks

So, what are your resolutions for 2009, or do you not have any?

Mine is to eat my 5 portions of fruit or vegetable every day and go to the gym every day... Heh! Am funny. Will try, though :sorry:

And thee?

(Just to freak you all out... I realised about 10 minutes ago that in 6 years, we'll be in the futuristic time depicted in Back to the Future Part 2. EEK! No flying cars, man. We got jipped.)

We still have few hours to go here...

We don't really have any resolutions...and we were doing pretty well with a healthy diet and exercise...until the holidays hit...so...we're going to get back to it...right after our anniversary dinner on Saturday....:)

When I was little...I thought things would be pretty sci-fi by the year 2000...and really...compared to 1973...they are.

I knew there would be computers in every home...I just thought they would be these GIANT things that took up the entire basement...like something I saw on the Twilight Zone....^_^

And who knew...telephones would no longer need to be attached to the wall?...:D

Are New Year's resolutions not big in the States?

I dunno...every year I used to make resolutions...part of the tradition I guess...but what I came to realize is that every year I was pretty much setting myself up for failure and disappointment...:sorry:

So ...I kept setting my resolutions lower and lower...until it was something like...I resolve to get out of bed each and every day....^_^...and that didn't always work...;)

Then I resolved not to make anymore resolutions...and so far...I've succeeded...:D

LAST YEAR, it was to regularly work out. At least 45 minutes, 3 times a week. I've actually kept that pretty well. I do it for exercise and the work on that upper body, but also just for the discipline of it.

THIS YEAR, I've been thinking about how I email and text WAY too much. I need to make a real effort to visit with people or at least phone them. I feel a bit isolated sometimes and it's entirely my own fault. I've even started doing some banking at the bank, with a teller - just to make it a human thing, even though it's so much easier and quicker to do it online. But now, it's all too fuzzy for a resolution; they need to be very specific or they don't work.

Heh :D

Mind you, Cris, are New Year's resolutions similar to oaths? We've been discussing them lots recently... do you see some cross-over?

Well there is a bit of a difference IMHO...unless one states something to the effect...I solemnly swear by God to ~~or I resolve to ~~so help me God.

I do, however, think it goes back to considering the wisdom of not making promises we might not be able to keep...either to ourselves...or to someone else.

It's interesting...back in my BC days...I seemed to make a lot of resolutions...not necessarily just at the New Year...'cause I totally understood there was a lot about me that needed fixing and I always thought...eventually...I could fix myself with a proper amount of will power and determination...and the New Year always seemed an opportune time to focus on that...:)

The more I got to know the Lord...the more I realized that I can rest peacefully in His promises....

Php 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

and

Php 4:12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

I believe these exhortations apply not only inwardly but outwardly as well.

Now...I don't think that making New Year resolutions to eat better and get more exercise and to be better stewards with our finances and to be better bosses, employees, spouses and parents and to walk more closely with the Lord is a bad thing...not at all....

I believe we should be continually renewing our minds and setting our hearts on the things that are pleasing to God...and the coming of a new year sometimes brings these things to a more profound remembrance in addition to our daily remembrance...

We just need to always remember...as Believers...we don't really walk in our strength any more...and our lives are all about Him to give Him honor and glory and praise.

My main resolution to put more trust in God that He knows what He's got planned for us. I've been too busy worrying about everything and not spending enough time just enjoying what I've got here.

2009 will potentially be the hardest year I have faced thus far. I just pray that I can glorify God through every decision I make. I also really pray that God will spare me from what is potentially to come but I have an eery feeling that He's been planning this for a while. ;)

Oh and talking about exercise...I now have to work off all the holiday weight I've gained. On my treadmill I go....^_^

I think it is more of an age thing than a regional thing: the older you get the more you realize that you don't want to wait for some future date to make a change you know you need. You also get tired of the depression that can sometimes hit from not sticking to a "resolution". As for myself? No New Years resolutions, I just want to stick to my guns in being a non-smoker.
