Corker: Trump ‘abused his authorities’ by claiming national security basis for tariffs

The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Tuesday that President Trump went beyond his official authority by utilizing an obscure national security provision of U.S. foreign trade law to levy tariffs against steel and aluminum imports.

Speaking to Hill.TV, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) hailed the trade agreement the administration recently announced with Canada and Mexico.

Nixon tried tariffs that were later repealed as they caused US businesses to lose money. The free trade agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico did not cancel Trump's tariff's on steel and aluminum. These tariffs are causing Ford to lose at a rate of a billion dollars a year. Canada has huge amounts of hydroelectric power and can make aluminum more cheaply than the United States with its more expensive electric power generation capacity.

To impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum on the basis of "national security" is beyond ludicrous. If anything the imposition of those tariffs is the real threat to national security. The USA does not have a better friend in the world than Canada, why try to turn us into an enemy?

Perhaps on account of how your leader is never going to send letters to Trump that'd make Trump fall in love with him like he said Kim Jong-un did?

Sarcasm of course yet there's some truth to it.

Yes, of course it's an abuse of power.....but as always, the spineless GOP Congress are afraid of Trump's tweets:

In June, Corker unveiled legislation that would have allowed the Senate to use its constitutionally granted power to reject or approve treaties to override presidential tariff assessments.

The legislation is unlikely to pass and Corker claimed that his GOP colleagues are afraid to take action on it for fear of offending the president and potentially making him lash out at them.

"'Gosh, we might poke the bear!' That is the language I've been hearing in the hallways. 'We might poke the bear. The president might get upset with us as United States senators if we vote on the Corker amendment,'"
