Hello,

I currently work at a fast food restaurant. While I do not usually work evenings, when I do, I notice that some of the employees who typically work during that time (among other things) eat some of the food without paying for it while on the clock. This is something I believe the nighttime assistant manager is clearly aware of - the crew makes no effort to hide it. I realize in some ways this is a small issue; however, when it comes down to it - this is stealing.

What is the right thing to do? Should I report it? I am not one who likes to "tattle" and I also worry that these individuals would be quite angry at me if I did mention this. However, another part of me feels that the general manager has a right to know.

Any thoughts?

Who would you report it to, the nighttime assistant manager (who already knows) or the general manager (who would than come down on the nighttime assistant manager and eventually you)? Since this is a fast food restaurant I presume you could get another job should the nighttime assistant manager decide you're no longer needed? If you do tell someone, just be prepared to lose your job eventually.

I'd consider making an emotionless and non-accusatory inquiry about whether it's company policy that the workers can grab a bite, with company approval, when on duty. If the Assistant Manager is aware of the practice but does nothing, he may have been advised by someone higher up that it's not an issue.

It's been a long time since I worked in fast food places...
back then, employees were allowed free meals/free uniforms...leftovers were either thrown away or taken
by employees. There was a freshness thingy/turning over
new/old food each shift etc...

If in doubt, check company policies.

Well its not your problem if the assistant manager is aware of it.
They may be allowed to I dont know.

When I worked fast food in evenings I was allowed a meal. I had a break though and ate it during breaktime, not while I was working though, but it was free.

if the manager of the shift is aware of it, then in effect it has already been reported to the management team, and unless you are a supervisor over those who are doing this, you have no responsibility to report this to begin with unless you are specifically asked about it. focus on your own assigned responsibilities, and when you are promoted to a supervisory position, it will become your responsibility to deal with the performance of those who report to you.

be careful about pointing out other people's faults; unless your performance is absolutely perfect, they will likely respond by focusing on your faults.

Rom 2:1 KJV
(1) Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

The OP is talking about the night shift & "leftovers were either thrown away or taken
by employees" was exactly what first came to my mind too.

I'd ask first, what the policy is. . . of the manager on duty at the time & accept their answer, because they are paid to manage & it is their call how to implement closing time policies.

You work there. So I'm sure you are aware of the is and is not okay. If you really know that what your co-workers are doing is wrong, then maybe mention it to a manager. But of course, the best thing you can do is to continue to live as an example of Jesus Christ and pray for your them.
