I looks like they are looking into removing the Rep cap. (Well changing the number format)

So the new upper limit should be 9,223,372,036,854,775,807

That should last for a while :)

I'm kind of bummed about this news - I liked a rep cap. But then it's still good news for alot of other people who don't want caps.
Or at least a cap that's so low. 2 bil. seemed a little low to me.
I thought 5 or 10 billion would be a good cap #.

What I'd REALLY like is for them to do is get rid of the stupid 24 hr. rep schedule thing. :swoon:
That's become a serious burden and pain in the heiny.

Right. So we can get off on some kind of ego trip, by getting into the gazillions and showing off our bling.

This makes no sense at all. Think, please think! Does it make any sense at all for someone to be able to give 9 billion stars with a single rep?

Meanwhile think of your families, even your time with the Lord. How much are you giving up now to play this game?

Because this is a game, that's all it is. It has nothing to do with "reputation." It's an online game, nothing more. It's addictive in that people are deriving a sense of identity from their rep scores. They have multiple socks, all capped out and waiting at the moment to fling themselves to those higher numbers. They are raring to go. Big deal. Get there, show off your bling. Who cares.

It makes no sense at all.

So ask the mods to turn off your rep, set it to 0, unplug and sell your computer, get rid of all your games & go spend time with your family.

I find this relaxing, and enjoy some time off.

You know, I got into this for fun. In ways it's been interesting. I've learned a lot about human behavior. I've learned even more about myself. But it's time now to realize what this is. It's a GAME.

Enjoy the game. But don't think for one moment that our high scores have anything to do with our "reputations."

I don't know of anyone that thinks these scores has anything to do with our reputation.

Also Everyone in the repaholic section understands that it is a game AFAIK

Are you just now coming to the understanding that this Relaxation / Game section is Just for Fun ?

Great. I'm glad that you feel the same way, that "reputation" has absolutely nothing to do with actual reputation or character for that matter. :)

So fine. Increase the rep cap so that someone can give 9 billion stars with a single rep.

BUT let's not call it "reputation" anymore. Let's call it "game score."

Let's make it clear also that other players have far more advantages with their multiple socks, so that the rest of us don't even begin to try to keep up.

It's a GAME.

I apologize if I offended you Ariel, but I'm getting tired of the nanny state laws, and people saying that because someone might take this wrong, or spend too much time, or not have the same advantage as others, then we need to prevent anyone from having fun.

The reps I think were first started to give someone reps if they posted a good post or something, then the rep subforum come up and people started giving and getting reps as a game. I do go help someone in the subforums and I'll rep people throughout the whole forums too besides playing the games in the rep subforum. So I know what Ariel's talking about too, I've heard gripes about how some have so many reps when it was intended for repping people for good posts or other things like that.

Yes, Ctay, you are right, "reputation" was originally meant to be a way of rewarding people for good post. When I came to CF more than four years ago, that is how we used it. I gained my first 40,000 or so points that way.

Then it was changed. It was fun, we've all had some good times.

The harm comes when you start realizing that people are hurting themselves and their families to continue something that has absolutely no bearing on reputation. It's a game, and it's addictive.

We've joked about that as well. We've talked about our "repaholic" habit. The actuality is that it IS addictive.

It's time to see it for what it is.

I've been talking to several other people; several of us are coming to feel the same way.

If the rep cap increases let's call it something else. Let's divorce it completely from the idea of "reputation."
