This thread is for people of ALL religions who believe religious tolerance is important. You don't have to follow or even agree with a religion to be tolerant of it. I call on everyone who believes in tolerance of all religions to highlight the good and commonalities and stop harping on the perceived bad and differences in our religions. Bashers and haters need not post here.

Suggestion: define religious tolerance.

I define religious tolerance, personally, as "the right of all people to choose a religion and practice it without governmental or societal interference."

How are you defining it? It could help people decide how they'll respond to this thread. :)

The term "religious tolerance" is usually used in a different context than just plain tolerance, though. And anyway, tolerance can mean the same thing as acceptance, though not always.

Merriam-Webster seems to agree with me on this one: "2 a : sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own."

I'll sign in for this

"the right of all people to choose a religion and practice it without governmental or societal interference."

That pretty much says it for me as well.

A common thread for a lot of beliefs would be do to others as you would have done to yourself. (I try to practice this. I would like to be a little better at it, and I try to.)

Have a good one!^_^

Well I for one see "tolerance" as a overused buzzword for the leftists in our society. I do not see how one can in good faith "tolerate" someone straight in to hell. Now, I do allow others to do as they please and will befriend anyone but I will always make my voice be heard and make sure that person has a clear understanding of the eternal consequences of the choice they are making. I read a great book recently by Ryan Dobson. It was called "be intolerant because some things are just stupid." Get it, it is great.

I would agree that it is not a wise idea to just blindly tolerate everything, espcially things that constitute sin.

HOWEVER, equally I think that using the threat of hell, common sense should tell any thinking person that by and large that method of 'witnessing' will only drive people further from Christianity.

Jesus told people of hell and so should we. Seeker friendly is not a good idea. Give the whole counsel or don't give at all.

Jesus also said not keeping pounding away if people weren't listening. Something about shaking off dust from one's feet. No one likes a clanging gong.

It took less than a page for it to be ruined. :(

Here's an idea to try and salvage this thread. Pick a religion other than your own, and list what you like about it. I'll start with the obvious one.

Christianity: Christians have contributed more to charity than possibly any other group in the world.

"I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a country which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all countries of the earth. I am proud that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I remember having repeated a hymn which is every day repeated by millions of human beings:"As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee." ....

People come to a Christian website they better be prepared to hear the gospel. If people want to fluff that up, then they can answer for it. Should we all just log off and "shake the dust off our feet" and give the site over to the pagans? No, the purpose of this site is to further the message of Jesus Christ and part of that message is that Jesus has died for our sins to save us from hell and without Him, people are going there for eternity. If you want to steer clear of giving that message that is your choice but I will not, even if I sound like a clanging gong to you or anyone else.

Well, you come to a Christian site and expect Christians to just sit back and not chime in? Not I. If that is not something you can handle, might I suggest some places that would completely cater to what you are seeking?

I believe there is temporal good in most all religions. Most of them teach good things and take care of those who are in need but when eternity comes around, only one will be of any lasting signifigance. If you call that ruining a thread, take it up with my Lord. He is the One who said to preach it to the ends of the earth.

Amen! Posting on a Christian forum is not the same as going to someone's house to witness the gospel or witnessing to someone on the street. If the people on this forum don't want to listen to messages about the Gospel, then perhaps a Christian website isn't the place for them to come to come for discussion.

Great idea!

Christianity - their love
Islam - their devotion
Judiasm - their history
Buddhism - their compassion
Hinduism - their many paths
Pagan - their love of nature
Ba'hai - their equality for all
Daoism - their philosophy
Sikhism - their tolerance
