The Gnostics at Corinth
"Both Aphrodite and Diana were associated with the fertility cults. According to Homer’s Odyssey 8.288,362 Phoenician influence was responsible for the importation of cultic prostitution as part of the Greek worship of Aphrodite by way of Cyprus and Cythera.
"Aphrodite was the goddess of Corinth and the patroness of prostitutes. Strabo 8.6.20 asserted that her temple on the Acrocorinthus had more than 1,000 hierodoules.
"When Paul warned the congregation at Corinth against immorality (1 Corinthians. 6:15-16), he was no doubt warning them in part against these cult prostitutes of the goddess Aphrodite.
"The Gnostics in Ephesus sought to combine the teachings of Diana with Christianity....It was in this setting, when these teachings began to invade the church at Ephesus that Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 1:4 "
