  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jason - praying for you.

You seem pretty mixed up at the moment. Your desires and God's will are getting kinda confused.

A friend of mine was having trouble with drinking. He knew he was drinking too much, too often, but found he really couldn't stop the behaviour. So he prayed, and asked God for help, to take the desire to drink too much away from him. God did, that night... and he's never had a problem since.

Now let's look at my experience. I was borderline alcoholic and only realised it when I decided to join the Salvation Army - which involved giving up alcohol. I craved it so badly... for about a year. Every time I walked past a bottle shop I wanted to go in and buy alcohol. Every time I felt down, I wanted to go get something alcoholic to drink. I prayed so hard for God to take those desires away. He didn't. He let me go through them, even though I'm VERY sure he didn't want me to go back to alcoholism!

So what am I trying to say? God doesn't always intervene to take away desires for something he doesn't approve of. Sometimes he does, but sometimes he expects us to recognise them as wrong and seek his help in working through them. I suspect it has to do with letting us deal with as much as he knows we're capable of dealing with, with his help. So just because God hasn't taken away your desire for a romantic relationship with this person, doesn't mean it's what he wants for you. And an additional point - if you pray 'God, please take these feelings away from me!' and then deliberately lapse into daydreams about a person... you're not co-operating whole-heartedly with God.

So, first off, let's look at your problem. You're 'in love' with your female friend.

Well, one positive is that she IS a friend... she's someone who's at least partially compatible with you, otherwise you wouldn't be friends.

One issue I see is that you two are in a kind of pseudo-relationship already. You're seeing each other very often, and it sounds as though you don't spend much time with other friends. In this sort of situation it's almost standard practice for at least one person to start having romantic feelings.

Another problem is that you seem to be a mess of emotions right now. Emotions are NOT good guides for behaviour. You need to be thinking when you look for someone to date or marry. This means looking at her very rationally... working out what her positives and faults are, and how that might impact you if you were in a relationship. eg -

- Does she tend to 'fall in love' easily?
- Does she lie to people?
- Is she selfish at times? (if the answer's no, look harder - everyone's selfish sometimes) When?
- How does she react when someone points out a shortcoming of hers? Does she pray about it and work on it if needed? Does she get angry or defensive?
- Does she have female friends?
- Does she have a mentor?

Keep in mind that love has got to do with your actions towards people. A test of love is NOT the fact that you can't think about anything else. That's just a sign of infatuation.

I found the book Boundaries in Dating (or Boundaries Before Marriage) by Drs Cloud and Townsend really good in helping me sort out my feelings and work out whether a potential relationship (with someone I was infatuated with) had a chance of actually working out. One key point it made was - if this girl isn't interested in a relationship, will you still want to be friends and only friends forevermore? If not, you're probably in the friendship for the wrong reasons, and in one way you're lying - pretending to be a friend when what you really want is a romantic relationship.

Another point it made was whether YOU are ready for a relationship. Are you mature enough? Do you have the self-control and selflessness to put another's well-being (physical and emotional but ESPECIALLY spiritual) above your own desires?

Hope that helps. God bless.

hi everyone. my name is jason and im a 26 year old christian from canada. this looks like a really great place. anyway my prayer request is not life or death, but its a serious problem i need guidence and advice with.

i have this female friend that im very close with. i would go as far as to say were best friends. shes a christian and the most amazing girl ive ever known. some time ago i realized i was starting to have feelings for her, so i prayed about it and asked God to take them from me if it was wrong. ive spent months praying about this and my feelings for her have only accelerated. now im starting to feel empty when shes not around, and shes constntly on my mind. i think I KNOW that God has made us for eachother, that Hes made her for me. i know shes the one im meant to be with. shes my wife. i know i think im crazy to. i know God wouldnt allow my heart to feel this way if it was wrong.

i want to tell her, but i feel so guilty and dont want to make her feel uncomfortable, because i dont believe she feels the same for me, or even could see herself taking our relationship in that direction. but she has a right to know. im starting to worry that its inappropriate to keep this from her(even tho were both very respectful of eachother).

im seeking Gods will, His guidance, and His blessing. i dont currently have a church family to turn to for support. i need to understand how to proceed. thank you all for your prayers and i would be happy to post more info. if requested.

jason

****UPDATE****

hi friends. thanx for all your input - its very encouaging to read your thoughts and im blessed to have found this place. since my original post, ive been coming here before bed every night and praying for the other requests in the thread. what an awesone tool for God this site is! God is amazing.

i wish i could understand what Gods doing with me right now. the way i feel is so unusual. (just a little history) i was engaged once to our family pastors daughter, but she was unfaithful and we broke up in late 2003. i was with her for many years, and loved her with all i had, but now i feel as much love for my friend, if not more. i dont understand how or why my feelings are so intence. and now when im with her, i act so uninterested and stupid because she scares me to death. i see no evidence that she has an interest in me. ive spent at least 3 nites a week with her for the last 4 years. she hasnt had a boyfriend in all that time, not even a date. believe me when i say, shes the most beautiful girl i have ever seen. without a dout. shes my best friend. she drives an extra 25 min to come see me after work, and another 25 to go home. when you like someone you continue to see them until you like them more and more and eventually love them. thats kinda the process ive gone through the last eight months. now i cant imagine my life without her. i know she would encourage me to be a better person and a better christian, and id even go as far to say god has been preparing me my whole life to be her perfect partner to build a future with. and vice versa for her. the amount of things we have in common is phenomanal. its hard to describe what our relationship is like. besides sitting close to eachother and the occasional playful nudge, we dont touch eachother. i do find her very attractive, but that has little to nothing to do with the feelings ive been having. we have never talked about dating or our deep feelings for eachother.

i have prayed so many times for Jesus to remove these feelings from me if it wasnt his will for me to be with her. God answers my prayers all the time, so there must be a reason for why i feel this powerful about her since then. and that really scares me. sorry for the short story, but all the people in my life that i could vent this on are too close to both of us, and i dont want to make this into a public secret.

your continued prayers would be appreciated. please pray that god will give me peace in my heart. im so stressed from worrying about this all the time. i feel like im going to explode sometimes. i just ask that God will give me answers, even if its just be patient. thank you again all.

jason

her names erika by the way. shes 23 and im 26. if u know me please keep a lid on it for me until i figure out what to do ;)
Oh wow! What a beautiful story:D . Ask her if she likes you back, ask her! You've got me in suspense here.
Hint Hint: girls are very good at hiding their feelings for close friends because they fear to loose the close relationship...I know this too well.
I'm praying for you brother, keep us updated please.
Peace,
-Stefania:prayer:

well i couldnt bring myself to do it, again. i really didnt have any time alone with her; thats the life af a single person in there 20s in a small town. i (we) have a large group of friends, mostly christians, and most nights everyone is looking for a place to hang out. i live alone in my own apartment, right in the middle of town, so everyone usually ends up here. its no excuse tho. even with a full house erika and i are one on one with each-others attention all night. the truth is i still have a million different ways of telling her running through my mind. i dont know which way i will finally say it. im fooling myself by thinking ill know when the time comes what to say, but the first sentence is the most important one. thats the one that im scared to death to say. shes going home tomorow after work and unless she invites me to her house again soon im going to take a day off from her. another reason i was procrastinating was i wanted to talk about this with my old bible study teacher. i havent spoken to her in years, but one day i was at work praying and thinking about who i knew that i could talk to about this. as soon a i thought of her i knew confessing all this to her would help me. she is the wisest woman i know. i called her two weeks ago, but her daughter has just had a baby and shes been very busy. we played phone tag a few times but will most likley be going for coffee after work together tomorow.

i did take a small step today tho. i asked her what her plans were on wednesday and if she wanted to do somthing. she asked what and i didnt have an answer for her, so i playfully said "just somthing". yeah dumb i know. anyway she called me on the way home to ask again what it was now that we were both alone. i told her it was nothing to stress about and that i had somthing important to talk to her about that was private. it was a small step, but wednesday will come, and she will remember i want to talk to her about somthing alone. and i know the second were alone she will say "so what did you want to talk to me about?" and since i have never lied to her, i will be forced into the middle of it and have no choice but to spill my guts. i just want to tell her the "brief truth". i think its best i "tippy-toe" as someone said. keep it mellow. i did like the suggestion about giving her the one rose and saying "just for being who you are". i liked it so much i went out and bought a dozen roses. i was going to give them all to her on the weekend, then i chaned my mind and decided to give her one, then i thought it was too much so theyve been in my bedroom in a vase for two days. its kinda sad i guess.

anyway im going to seek advice and prayer form an old mentor tomorow. im going to spend as much alone time in prayer as i can, and i will post again soon. for those who havent lost there patience with me, i continue to appreciate your prayers and support. you are my congragation, and i pray the lord will bless you all for your compassion and caring. thank you again

thanx for your post. i posted somewhere here about my privious relationship. believe me im over analyxing every part of who she is. i want one love for the rest of my life. ive had long enough to look at this objectively. she hasnt been in love since high school, so not easily at all. she never lies. of corse she is selfish, but she is the least selfish of anyone i know our age. to put my finger on a "when" is very hard. she could grow a little in dealing with shortcomings, but overall she is an example to me, and if proven wrong in some way she would be the first to humble herself and find gods will. she has many female friends, and im sure i make them jeleous somtimes. and if i had to guess her mentor, as her best friend, i would say her pastor and wife, or her friends mom. she has alot of spiritual respect for them and she would turn to them if anyone for help or advice or prayer.

some people here might recognize this:

Well I’m lookin’ for a girl who virtuous
Cause God laid it on my heart to search for this
So I open up the word to the book of proverbs
The 31st chapter tells me all about her
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain
A woman who fears the lord, she ain’t playin’
Hear what I’m sayin’, cause I’m sayin’ it clearly
She’s the kinda girl I gots to have near me

I’m lookin’ into hookin’ with a lady
not a girly of the worl’y that’s shady
But the kinda girl you meet
Behind the doors of a church
Ya see, God will bring her to me
So I don’t have to search
Too hard I’ve been scarred by the ones of the past
So put an APB out on the one that will last
A little longer than a roll in the hay for sure
But a bona fide lady’s what I’m prayin’ for

 thanx for your advice. i will pray about it.
