The Greek word for 'hold fast' means possess. Nothing about working to "hold on" as we usually think of that phrase today. Possession is the key.

Those who possess the free gift of eternal life (Rom 6:23) cannot lose it because God's gifts are irrevocable (Rom 11:29).

No, a true believer can not "loose" salvation. But an unsaved professing Christian, can abandon their profession of faith. It's to those people that the warnings in scripture are for.
