Perhaps you could explain the fundamental difference between throwing bones on the ground to predict the weather and trying to use the position of stars and planets as a way to predict the weather.

There's also augury if you prefer. Knowing the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow could help prevent hurricanes.

Thank you for the link. Here we see confirmation that the cold temperatures are from the polar jet stream. Not as unusual or severe as when the polar vortex shifted three years ago.

It's called an arctic blast, the polar jet stream dips down to places like Texas bringing below-average winter temperatures, this is perfectly normal. I'm from Texas, I'm used to crazy weather.

Just so I am understanding this right. You are warning everyone that next week will be cold.

I am warning folks that live in the US that record cold is predicted to be coming soon and it's not even winter yet. Folks should get prepared. This cold mass coming down from Alaska will meet up with warmer air from the East and they are saying it will spark off major Thunder storms and snowfall.

Time to get the ice melt, the Snow blower out of storage, gasoline to power it, food, fuel oil etc. All these things could be not available considering this is a almost Country wide blast which could slow down greatly any supplies coming in.

Did you know that many food stores, gasoline stations etc are supplied by daily deliveries? Even one or two held up by the extreme weather could cause great shortages which leads to other things.

From the look of the map, we should expect KY, TN, and AL to be 30+ degrees colder than normal by December 9.

Chattanooga averages 52 in December. So if high temperatures are around 20 degrees F by the end of next week, we'll know this is valid.

Weather.com's 10 day forecast has nothing lower than 39 degrees (as of this moment).

It's a head to head contest. Weather.com versus climatedepot.

Current forecast for Chattanooga has a high of 40 on Friday. And 46 on Thursday and Saturday.

It is supposed to be 73 and sunny here in my part of America. As a matter of fact it will be nice all weekend.

And the calendar is indication enough to be prepared...as anyone who was raised in the colder climates would know.

True, as I have always lived in the northeast for over a half century, however it's not just about it's December thus it's cold outside, it's about it's not yet officially winter and record setting temps, as well as deviations from lows for this time of year.

Many are procrastinators and don't 'put up' or 'set in' things like in the old days where checking out the wooly bears as well as other things in nature to be a warning for mild or cold winters as we experience both.

Especially following on the tails of one of the warmest Novembers ever I think might lead some to believe that it really can't happen.

However in my 'neck of the woods' they are saying the record setting cold temp are expected.

Arctic Blast No. 1

As indicated in my long-range winter forecast, the super-mild December of last year will NOT repeat itself. In fact, December 2016 should end up with temperatures below normal (last December was 13 degrees ABOVE normal). The first of the Arctic blasts will be moving in for this weekend, with another, even colder one, coming later next week.


The first blast has already affected much of the country to our west. This map from today shows a huge area of waaaay below normal temperatures that entered the country across the Northern Rockies and Plains.

When you add in the wind, it will feel close to 10 degrees Friday and Saturday mornings. That’s plenty cold.


Arctic Blast No. 2

But this weekend’s chill won’t be as extreme as the next blast. ------ look at the scale on the right-MUCH colder.

By next Thursday, daytime temperatures may not get out of the 20s, and wind chills could be near or even below zero. Now, that’s cold!
