Today was the first hard freeze of the season here in my sub-tropical part of the South. Now I can finally clear out those elephant ears that were wilting in the chill. Now they are undeniable dead. Well, the bulb might sprout again next year, depends how rough the winter is.

or you could lift it, and shelter it in some peat moss or styrafoam packing peanuts through the cold Winter, and then replant it when the nights are above 40 degrees.

Mine went that way about a week ago. I had one in a planter that I had over wintered in my house and it did well but I didn't get it in the house in time and decided not to because I found out they are poisonous to dogs.

Up here we dig them up (the bulbs) and hang in the garage in a onion bag to over winter, then plant in spring. You are blessed to be able to grow them so profusely. I've always loved EE's , have you ever harvested the root and made yourself some Poi? :)

In Newfoundland if you don't like the weather when you walk out your front door, just turn around and walk out the back door.

Yup. I've gone from wearing shorts comfortable in warm weather to dusting snow off my car the next day.

It's almostwinter, it's cold, but where I live the temperatures will be above freezing until late next week. Even then, those temperatures are not outside the norm.

I saw nothing out of the norm from this cold front, it was a typical cold front in December.

Many years ago I spent a summer at Dundurn Army Camp in Saskatchewan. One day I woke to find the ice frozen in my wash basin outside the tent. By 11 AM it was about 90 F and we got a terrific thunderstorm that dumped almost 2" of rain. By 2 PM it was 90 F again and the wind came up. By 3 PM we had a sandstorm.

That was my experience too, it was cold, but it's winter. What is significantly different from years before is there is less "in-between" weather, which is causing leaves to fall later each year. It's warm and then suddenly snaps to being cold. But for every cold day, there are two higher than normal warm days.

Yup. Your post about a suddenly snapping reminds me of our first freeze from a couples of years ago, we got down into the mid-20s instead of hitting 30-32 range for a short while, the leaves just turned brown and fell off in a week.
