Well, last night i prayed for the first time in a while and read my bible for a while, and i was just needing some advice on how to be a good christian. I was raised in church, but for the last few years I haven't been living right. I really just need some help from others here like me who've been caught up in the whole drinking, drugs, and sex lifestyle.

First off you do not look at yourself as having those sins any more - if you repented you are washed in the Blood of Jesus and He sees those sins no more. See yourself as Jesus sees you. Put your hand in the hand of Jesus and let the Holy Spirit guide you. Jesus is as close as your shadow and only a heartbeat away. The Bible tells us He is your friend, talk to Him, pray as you go through your day and just go forward being the servant that Jesus has called us to be. You'll grow closer each day, but not if you always drag that baggage of the past with you - it is gone and in the lake of forgetfulness. Praise God and hold your head high that your name is in the Lamb's Book of Life.

So, IF you have any addictions to alcohol or drugs, you may want to (in addition to the above post) find some recovery support. I would recommend Celebrate Recovery (Search the website it will tell you if a group is nearby) Jesus is powerful enough to deal with our sin, but from my own experience, often he lets us work through the consequences of our sin and others who share some things in common can help.
AA or NA can be useful if you can find a fellow brother in Christ to go through the program with you. My whole point is that addictions can be trickier to beat for SOME people. I have heard of people washed in the blood of the lamb and walking away addiction free, and I totally believe Christ can make that happen. I just think that for some people he doesn't, or whatever the reason it doesn't happen that way.

If you have no addictions, awesome. Welcome to the family! My advice is to pray constantly, read the Bible, join a bible study, and find a brother who is willing to disciple you and answer questions you may have.

i was just needing some advice on how to be a good christian.

Jesus said that if we abide (live) in His words, then we are His disciples and we will know the truth and the truth will st us free. Truth is key to the Christian life.

One trap to avoid is trying to make ourselves better by our own strength. This is the leaven of the Pharisees and the book of Galatians was written to Christians who were starting down this path.

Real progress comes from walking in the Spirit;

Dear andrew76. In Matthew 22, Jesus tells a Lawyer: " The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: Love thy neighbour as thyself." Then Jesus tells us quite strongly: "On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." God wants our Love, freely given and No conditions tagged on.
Start by treating all you know and all you meet, friends or not friends, treat them as you would love to be treated: with kindness and always friendly words. God will see your efforts, and God will bless you.
Jesus will give you His Love and Joy, and the Holy Spirit will empower you with Love, also. Then thank God and share all Love and Joy with your neighbour: keep asking God and thanking God, and sharing all Love and Joy with all around you. Jesus told us to: " ask and ye will receive."
( Matthew 7: 7-8) You might stumble or forget, then " ask God to forgive you,
and carry on sharing all Love and Joy. God is Love and God wants loving children/sons and daughters. Love is a Christian`s strong weapon, and the world around will know that we belong to Jesus our Saviour.
All we say or do, all we advice or stand for, should be from Love and Compassion. JESUS IS THE WAY, and Jesus will lead us, Andrew.
I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

Well first off....

Congratulations! Did you know that angels are celibrating in heaven because you have received Christ? They're having a party (just using my own description of it) because of you.

Luke 15:10 "In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

There is no one key to being a good Christian, and many things will take time. Good advice is often to find friends who will encourage you in your walk with God. Find a good church that you can learn and grow from. Read the Bible when you can.

You will stumble. You will fall. You will make a lot of mistakes. But every Christian does. Just remember that Christ paid for ALL your sins. Past, present, future. This does not give us liscence to go out and "party till the end of the world" because that is an insult to what Christ did, but it is freedom from guilt that keeps returning over and over. You are righteous before God. Start small. If you can find a pastor or friend who is willing to ask questions I find that a good place to start. Ask some questions you may have about certain beliefs, things in your life and what you should do.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Just remember one step at a time.

Welcome! Take your time and don't put too much pressure on yourself. It's important to remember that God knows your heart. If you struggle, He knows it and feels compassion. It's the self-righteous liars that act perfect that really make Him angry. The Holy Spirit will help you to see what needs to change in your life, as well as how and when to do it. Keep reading the Bible and try to learn about how it applies to us today. There are some great resources on the Internet to help learn the basics.
