  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Excellent CD.

I bought Seven Swans for a friend for Christmas....but I'm thinking about just keeping it and giving him some cash instead because I know that in like...two months...he'll sell the CD at the Used CD place by his house.

The Darkness: Justin Hawkins (vocals, guitar); Dale Hawkins (guitar); Richie Edwards (bass guitar); Edward Graham (drums). Recording information: Rockfield Studios, Monmouth, England (2005). On the Darkness's second full-length album, ONE WAY TICKET TO HELL... AND BACK, frontman Justin Hawkins brings back his trademark unitard and Wagnerian falsetto for another delicious pop-metal outing. Although the melodies aren't as immediately appealing as on PERMISSION TO LAND, the disc still boasts its share of air-guitar anthems, particularly the hard-rocking "Is It Just Me?" And while the six-string playing of Hawkins and his brother, Dan, still carries the record, the Darkness unleashes its inner Jethro Tull with a wider instrumental palette that includes sitar, pan flute, bagpipes, and an entire orchestra, making for a considerably fuller sound. Of course, as on PERMISSION, Hawkins's soaring falsetto is the British group's calling card, and it's displayed to great effect on the Slade-like "Hazel Eyes" and "English Country Garden," which recalls Queen at their most stately. Though this album can't quite top its bold, brash predecessor, it reveals the broad range of the Darkness's charms, making it a worthy companion piece to that lauded debut

"Stand Up" and "Crash" by DMB plus "Some Devil" by Dave Matthews (solo). The first one is okay but doesn't exactly blow my mind. Love the other two.

excellent purchases. i will agree that stand up is sub par. do yourself a favor and buy:

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds - Live at Luther College
Dave matthews band - under the table and dreaming
dave matthews band - before these crowded streets.

(if you don't already have them)

that should do it.

Rather than buy gifts for others during the Christmas season, I've decided to spend money on myself. I'm a bad person. Regardless, I'm quite excited about listening to these discs I just bought:

I See a Darkness -- Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Just Another Diamond Day -- Vashti Bunyan
Her Majesty -- The Decemberists
Tanglewood Numbers -- Silver Jews
In the Reins -- Calexico/Iron & Wine

Smoosh - She Like Electric
First off, I always laugh when I see the name Smoosh because that was the name of a band in a sketch on Mr. Show with Bob and David that held the "Get Executed on the Moon" Contest. I love Mr. Show.

Second, She Like Electric is surprisingly really really good. At least, I think so.

Great albums.

Have you heard the new Vashti Bunyan album? Or the collaboration with Animal Collective? Both are wonderful.

And I really like that Silver Jews album. Possibly more than all of their other albums. That was definitely one of my top eleven records of 2005. Yes, eleven.

The record store was out of her new one, so I settled for 'Just Another Diamond Day'. I was aware that she had worked with Animal Collective and Devendra, but I don't know the specific tracks. Is she on 'Feels'?

Speaking of 'Feels', I gave it another listen yesterday, and I'm really starting to like it.

No, she and Animal Collective put out an EP earlier this year called Prospect Hummer.

I really like Feels. I may be in the minority on that, but I think the first half alone is good enough to put it in the top ten albums of the year. We'll find out tomorrow if Pitchfork agrees.

I'll have to check that out. I've been waiting for the Pitchfork release of the best of '05, just to see if mine are anywhere near there's. I was reading through various artists' picks of the best from this year, and "Feels" had a ton of nods. I was surprised by how few Sufjan received. If he doesn't claim their number one spot, I'll be surprised.

hah! that's awesome. I got that album to review for a certain website and didn't really like it too much. But I think my review came out as drugged sounding as the album does... as someone who has never done drugs I can't really know for sure, but listening to that album seems to have similar hallucogenic effects...
