Depends on the class and the assignment. I am in grad school and therefore there is a LOT more reading involved. I can usually judge by the assignment whether or not reading all of the material will be necessary.

What are you studying?

Not reading doesn't nessesrily mean not learning. cramming for exams usually does, but some people learn alot more from lecture and retain that I don't get much out of the book stuff.

I don't always do all of my reading. I find that you have to find a balance between doing all of your readings and doing papers. I find that papers are of the utmost imporantce for me to work on. It depends on the professor whether I do all of the readings or not. Some professors give all the information that you need for the exams in their lectures while, other professors you have to read the text.

I can't believe you guys are going to college for an education... Like the rest of the educational system, get good grades, get your diploma, and then you're going to have to get re-educated anyways. With that in mind, go to as little class as possible, have as much fun as you can and don't do anything stupid.

The whole point of going to college is to get an education. Why pay for something (or waste your parents money) if you are not going to get the most out of it. The point of going to college is to prepare you for a career and of course good grades are part of this. There are many other things you can do to help improve your ablitily to support yourself and even make a difference in the world after you are done college. Such as particpating extracuricular activies. They can be a lot of fun, but you also get to next work and meet people.

I know a lot of people think that college is just a time to goof off, but when it is all done and don't know what you want to do with your life what are you going to say then?

Just cuz you have fun doesn't mean that you don't know what you want to do. You can get good grades and have as much fun as possible. Extracurricular activities are great, I think that I've learned more from playing sports than I have from classes.

I can agree with Laxitup to a point. I was involved in a ton of organizations and extracurricular activities in college. I also made great grades.

I think the experience in college--- including the extracurricular activities--- was more benefical than the education I received.

You spend 90% of your time OUTSIDE of the classroom while in college. There is only a short amount of time spent IN the classroom. Life experience comes from the 90% of the time that you are not in the classroom. :)

Up until midterms, I do all (or most, anyway) of my class readings. But then everything seems to come at you so fast...exams, then papers, then exams again...that I don't have time to read anymore. But, I learn a lot because I go to all the lectures. And, even though I don't read the chapters week by week, I don't cram for exams. I study for every exam for at least 5 days, usually two chapters a day, and I take notes while I read. Then for a few hours before the exam, I review all the notes. Seems to work for me, cuz I get good grades!

Not all of what I learn from uni will be of great use for me once I hit hereal world next year... I learn so much more from prac having a professional evaluate my teaching offering advice on a personal level, and will learn even more once I"m out there teaching for real.

However, next year I know I'm going to turn around and wished I'd learnt more, or refer to notes I've taken or books I've brought.

I have nothing to do with extra-curricular stuff anymore. Not since high school. But then, I travel an hour to get to or from uni... too expensive to travel there for one thing.

I only read stuff that relates to my assignments when I am doing them... generally I end up reading most of the assigned reading for these purposes anyway.
