18. God is both willing AND able to save all. Given that He is omnipotent, we can ALL look forward with confidence to our eventual salvation. See Psalm 49:15, 86:13, 103:8-14, 136,
Isaiah 1:18, 6:7, 25:7-8, 26:19, 33:24, 43:25, 44:22, 45:8, 55:8-9, 57:16, 64:6-9,
Jeremiah 3:12.
Lamentations 3:26-32,
Ezekiel 11:19, 16:55,
Hosea 13:14,
Micah 4:5, 7:18-19,
Ephesians 1:10, Philipians 3:21,
Colossians 1:19-20, I Thessalonians 1:10, I Timothy 1:15, 2:4-6, 4:10, 6:13, II Peter 3:9.
It's a false gospel: that all will be saved.
Psalm 49:15
King James Version
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
I see the Psalmist has an expectation of redemption, but where is the ALL?
Psalm 86:13
King James Version
13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
Same thing. A misrepresentation by universal salvation of what Scripture is teaching.
Psalm 103:8-14
King James Version
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
Again, a temporal context bereft of the revelation of the New Testament. It is applying to everyone something that is specific to the Psalmist.
We also need to pay attention to the reference to the Father. Christ makes it clear that not all men are the children of God, much less the sons of God who have been baptized into Christ.
Skipping on to Scripture that might have relevance to what we know about Eternal Judgment today...
Philippians 3
King James Version
1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.
2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
In view are believers that are in Christ. Not ALL.
Philippians 3:18-21
King James Version
18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
Verse 21 was the proffered proof text.
Ridiculous. Not sure how anyone can view this as a proof text for universal salvation.
Colossians 1:19-21
King James Version
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
We finally have an "ALL" in the text, but it applies to those reconciled to Christ. The reference to things in earth and Heaven refer to the just spirits who were liberated from Hades/Sheol and those who are still living on the earth.
And Paul makes it clear how one is reconciled, and by what God will reconcile "all things unto Himself:" through the blood of His Cross.
And we have been given the ministry of reconciliation:
25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
The riches of the glory of the Mystery of Christ is the very indwelling of Christ Himself.
In other words, those who are in Christ are those who are reconciled. Here is reconciliation of the world:
2 Corinthians 5:17-20
King James Version
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
We are told God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself. Does this mean the entire world was reconciled? No. Does this mean the entire world will be reconciled? No.
1 Thessalonians 1:10
King James Version
10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
Delivered who from the wrath to come? ALL? no, those who are members of the Church.
Paul will state in his second letter what happens to those who obey not the Gospel:
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9
King James Version
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
I honestly don't know how anyone can take universal salvation seriously. Above we see that the lost are those who do not know God and reject the Gospel. They will suffer everlasting punishment which is everlasting separation from God.
1 Timothy 1:15
King James Version
15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
No universal salvation there. It's a pretty well-known fact Christ came to save sinners, and an equally well-known fact not all will be saved.
1 Timothy 2:1, and 4-6
King James Version
1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Yes, God wants all men to be saved, hence the command to pray for all—because they are not all saved.
1 Timothy 4:10
King James Version
10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
I can see how this might be construed as God is Savior in the practical sense of all men, but it remains that it doesn't negate Paul's teaching elsewhere. God is the Savior of all men, but that doesn't equate to all men will be saved. He is not the Savior of those that know not God and do not obey the Gospel. He is their Judge.
1 Timothy 6:13
King James Version
13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
I can only assume that it is the quickening of all things that is in view here. It is true that God gives life to all things. But it is equally true Christ will judge two groups: the quick and the dead.
Acts 10:42-43
King James Version
42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Remission of sins is for those who believe in Christ.
Not ALL.
2 Peter 3:9
King James Version
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
This answers the question as to why the Lord has not come back yet: because He is not willing that any should perish, but that all men come to repentance.
Doesn't change the fact that not all men will repent. He will return and when He does He will judge the quick and the dead, which shows that not all are quickened and that there are those who remain dead.
