Well, I don't know if I am patient enough to take the time to think up as many as ten, Miss Quieted, but here is one that I think is simple but manages to be profound enough to strike me on occasion. (And it actually came from a short-lived action show in the late 90's based on the Mortal Kombat games, of all things. ^_^)

Quoted by Raiden, god of thunder and protector of the realm of Earth:

"When you claim anger is the reason for being unyielding in a conflict with a friend, and not pride, anger is often just another word for the same thing. However, there is a second face of pride in this situation; it's called forgiveness."

I guess if I were to pick just one quote it would be from John Bunyan's work Pilgrim's Progress. "If a man were to live well, let him fetch his last day to him and make it always his Company- keeper" I think often of this quote and it is a sobering reminder that victory and perseverance in this life are most easily attained by keeping our focus on eternity and our own inevitable passing.

Thanks for starting this thread
It is a great idea:)

It's not a 'quote' in the sense of quick and quirky, but it's quite profound for such a short passage;

“It has been said by some one that ‘the proper study of mankind is man.’ I will not oppose the idea, but I believe it is equally true that the proper study of God's elect is God; the proper study of a Christian is the Godhead. The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father. There is something exceedingly improving to the mind in a contemplation of the Divinity. It is a subject so vast, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; so deep, that our pride is drowned in its infinity. … No subject of contemplation will tend more to humble the mind, than thoughts of God. … But while the subject humbles the mind it also expands it. He who often thinks of God, will have a larger mind than the man who simply plods around this narrow globe. … the most excellent study for expanding the soul, is the science of Christ, and him crucified, and the knowledge of the Godhead in the glorious Trinity. Nothing will so enlarge the intellect, nothing so magnify the whole soul of man, as a devout, earnest, continued investigation of the great subject of the Deity. And, whilst humbling and expanding, this subject is eminently consolatory. Oh, there is, in contemplating Christ, a balm for every wound; in musing on the Father, there is a quietus for every grief; and in the influence of the Holy Ghost, there is a balsam for every sore. Would you lose your sorrows? Would you drown your cares? Then go, plunge yourself in the Godhead's deepest sea; be lost in his immensity; and you shall come forth as from a couch of rest, refreshed and invigorated. I know nothing which can so comfort the soul; so calm the swelling billows of grief and sorrow; so speak peace to the winds of trial, as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead”

C. H. Spurgeon

#1. From DC Talks song "Jesus Freak" -
Kamikaze, my death is gain
I've been marked by my maker
A peculiar display
The high and lofty, they see me as weak
'Cause I won't live and die for the power they seek

#2. Romans 12:17 (NKJV) - Repay no one evil for evil.

#3. Romans 12:21 (NKJV) - Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

#4. John 1:1-5 (NKJV) - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

#5. John 3:16 (NKJV) - For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

#6. John 8:31-32 (NKJV) - Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

#7. From the 1991 film "HARLEY DAVIDSON and THE MARLBORO MAN" - "Its better to be dead and cool, than alive and uncool.

#8. Something I kind of made up - I would rather be a beggar in Heaven than a king in Hell.

#9. From the 1961 movie "The Hustler". -

"Bert Gordon: Eddie, is it alright if I get personal?
Fast Eddie: Whaddaya been so far?
Bert Gordon: Eddie, you're a born loser.
Fast Eddie: What's that supposed to mean?
Bert Gordon: First time in ten years I ever saw Minnesota Fats hooked... really hooked. But you let him off.
Fast Eddie: I told you I got drunk.
Bert Gordon: Sure you got drunk. You have the best excuse in the world for losing; no trouble losing when you got a good excuse. Winning... that can be heavy on your back, too, like a monkey. You'll drop that load too when you got an excuse. All you gotta do is learn to feel sorry for yourself. One of the best indoor sports, feeling sorry for yourself. A sport enjoyed by all, especially the born losers.

Fast Eddie: Thanks for the drink.

#10. From the 1961 movie "One-Eye Jacks" - Sure, kid, you'll get a trial, a fair trial. And then I'm gonna hang you.

I can't think of as many as ten, but one of my friends who is a pastor said to memorize this verse

I am crucified with Christ, yet not I, but Christ lives in me and the life I live now in the flesh, I live by faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20

Amen!

I have quoted this on cf often enough and since seminary it has been one of my favorites. I read it and am reminded that though love makes me vulnerable it is worth the risk. The alternative is to be hardened, with no compassion or love to give, buried in my own selfishness. The alternative is far worse than a broken heart.

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” C.S Lewis - Four Loves

Actually, these are pretty much in order....

1) "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." - Jesus
2) "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets" - Jesus
3) "Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law." - St. Paul
4) "Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us." St. John
5) "If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realise that one is proud. And a biggish step, too. At least, nothing can be done before it. If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed." - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
6) "The point of the resurrection…is that the present bodily life is not valueless just because it will die…What you do with your body in the present matters because God has a great future in store for it…What you do in the present—by painting, preaching, singing, sewing, praying, teaching, building hospitals, digging wells, campaigning for justice, writing poems, caring for the needy, loving your neighbor as yourself—will last into God's future. These activities are not simply ways of making the present life a little less beastly, a little more bearable, until the day when we leave it behind altogether (as the hymn so mistakenly puts it…). They are part of what we may call building for God's kingdom" - N.T. Wright, Surprised by Hope
7) "the work of salvation, in its full sense, is (1) about whole human beings, not merely souls; (2) about the present, not simply the future; and (3) about what God does through us, not merely what God does in and for us." - N.T. Wright, Surprised by Hope
8) "If you don't make time to work on creating the the life that you want, you're eventually going to be forced to spend a lot of time dealing with a life you don't want." - Kevin Ngo
9) "It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishment the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." - William Ernest Henly
10) "If you're the smartest person in the room, then you're in the wrong room." - Anonymous

Another one I like is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
and Proverbs 3:5-6

All my quotes are from the Bible, its because the Word is Quick and Powerful.
Hebrews 4:12
2 Timothy 1:7 is also an important one for me.
My favourite from Jesus are 'I will never leave your nor forsake you' and 'In my Fathers house are many mansions, I go there to prepare a place for you'

ok thats about 7 so far.
One I have on my wall is Proverbs 31:29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but you excel them all.

It reminds me to be excellent at what is good, and innocent of evil. Romans 16:19

I also like that My Lord is my refuge and strong tower - and Psalm 23.

Theres a lot of uplifting quotes people say to encourage others but I think the best come from God's Word. If you feeling down even if you tell yourself 'I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me' (Philippians 4:13) say it, because it's true, and the words will become true in your life. Sometimes if there's nobody around to encourage you, you need to speak them to yourself.

There are so many good quotes that everyone brought up! Some so thought provoking too! Thank you everyone for sharing!!!I enjoyed reading through. :)

I suppose I should post some of mine too, though there are so many it is hard to decide!! ^_^

1. "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matthew 22:37-40

2. "Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life." -Francis of Assisi

3. “It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses

4. “Whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, that thing is sin to you.” - Susanna Wesley

5. “. . . charity must rule our external actions, and have the predominant hand in the use of all gifts, in the venting of all opinions. Whatsoever knowledge and ability a man has, charity must employ it and use it; without this, duties and graces make a noise, but they are shallow and empty within. Now he shows the sweet properties of [charity], and good effects of it: how universal an influence it has on all things, but especially, how necessary it is to keep the unity of the church. . . . It is a great weakness and meanness of spirit to be soon angry” -Hugh Binning (Banner, 2004: pp18-19).

6. "Everybody has a secret world inside of them. All of the people of the world, I mean, everybody. No matter how dull and boring they are on the outside, inside them they've all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds. Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands maybe." -Neil Gaiman

7."Give up defining yourself - to yourself or to others. You won't die. You will come to life. And don't be concerned with how others define you. When they define you, they are limiting themselves, so it's their problem. Whenever you interact with people, don't be there primarily as a function or role, but as the field of conscious presence. You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are." -Eckhart Tolle

8. "Most people get married believing a myth that marriage is beautiful box full of all the things they have longed for; Companionship, intimacy, friendship etc ... The truth is, that marriage at the start is an empty box, you must put something in before you can take anything out. There is no love in marriage, love is in people, and people put love in marriage. There is no romance in marriage, you have to infuse it into your marriage. A couple must learn the art, and form the habit of giving, loving, serving, praising, of keeping the box full. If you take out more than you put in, the box will be empty." -Unknown

9. "If you love a flower, don't pick it up. Because if you pick it up it dies and ceases to be what you love. So if you love a flower, let it be. Love is not about possession. Love is about appreciation." -Osko

10. "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." -Albert Einstein
