  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I heard this line in a song last night and it really struck a nerve with me, I am just wondering what everyone else thinks about it.

I know the biggest crime is just to throw up your hands; say "this has nothing to do with me, I just want to live as comfortably as I can."

So, what do you think?

Interesting Arikay, I wouldn't have thought of that, my initial thought was that of poverty and other social problems that people tend to ignore as long as they're comfortable. I agree that the lesson you stated is very important. I had a sociology teacher paint that quote as a border on his classroom wall.

Arguably true in many cases.

I'm an activist for social change but not a fanatic. I have a sense of humor. I do not like moralistic activist types who believe the sun rises and sets on their cause. However, I dislike smug, complacent, apathetic types more.

Someone said the opposite of love is not hate but indifference.

I don't like bums but often I'll give 'em a handout. Nothing big. I gave $3 to a couple who were on the way back to the city on the Jersey Turnpike and claimed they lost the guy's wallet but I suspect they blew it at the casinos in Atlantic City. Some might have viewed the $3 gratuity as parsinimous, but, I have to work for a living and I figure the more who help, the more benefit from their own generosity...

Thanks for sharing everyone!

La Bonita Zorilla- I like what you said about the opposite of love being indifference.

Outspoken- I especially like the first quote you posted "The greatest evil of all is when good men do nothing."

I wouldn't call myself an activist, but going into social studies I am becoming more and more aware of the problems around me. When I try to discuss them with people, sometimes the indifference people have to these problems astounds me.

Agreed. I could write quite a bit with regards to this thought, but it does boil down to how (sometimes unnecessary) self-interest masking out the greater common good so many times.. and we see that problems that this creates..

I would say that context really defines whether something is wrong or not.

For instance, if we walk through a town and lo and behold notice a gang war, it would be the quintessential expression of fatuity to say "nope, gotta help 'em; it's objectively wrong to not help when we can," and throw rocks; the best choice may be to do nothing, and hence do everything -- for in this choice you save yourself, and thus the possibility to do greater deeds in the future. However, if you see a homeless guy on the street and you have spare change, you should probably hit him up, conditional, of course, on your assuredness that he will not go out and spend it all on booze.
