Quitting Smoking

I'm trying to quit smoking and am looking for advice, but I don't want to be preached to or converted. I just want to know what people did that an atheist can use to help quit smoking.
I will probably try hypnosis to help with withdrawal, so please tell me if it has worked for you.
Thanks

  oooooh i should have told you this earlier. i didn't think of it. when i was quitting: i prepared a list of things to do that side tracked me. i spent the worse times though chatting with someone close (hubby and mom) about all the thoughts rushing though my head. i'd say but i want to & why, and he'd remind me of all the things i was determined to quit about.
personally, i think from what you said earlier, you are doing great. i think you'll do better this time. more so than you exspect.

My father quit smoking at the age of 63 after a heart attack and the installation of a pace maker. As you know there are a lot of products to help people quit. But I don't know how much those products help after all is said and done. My father chewed a lot of gum - ordinary sugarless gum. This was just to keep his mouth busy.

I can remember during my college years, it was difficult to avoid smoking if you include another activity college students sometimes explore - drinking. So if you can avoid the bar scene (pub, pool hall, etc.), at least this incentive to smoke would be gone. Some folks respond well to the idea of "getting hooked on something else" that might cost about the same. So use the money you save on cigarettes to take up a hobby you enjoy.

I cannot imagine how difficult this must be for you but congratulations on making the first step in the attempt to quit. Your lungs will thank you! :)
Have you considered the patch or nicotine gum? They may help you to bridge the gap between smoking and going cold turkey.
Good luck and Godspeed in your efforts!

I suggest going to mass for 4 consecutive sundays and praying the rosary often. Just kidding :) The only thing to do is just find someone to keep you accountable, throw all your cigs away, and wait it out. It will suck for about 2 weeks and after that it'll get better. When I quit smoking I'd always be fine until I'd smell someone else's smoke and then I'd get a craving. You can do it though. Just takes a lot of will power and someone to slap you across the face if you fall off the wagon.

Hi rdee:hug: :D
Thank you, everyone who replied, for the advice.

I'm down to 2-3 cigs a day and hope to quit within the week. I would have tried Wellbutrin, but I'm already on Celexa. My doctor told me not to use patches or gum because of the drugs I'm on, so I have used other means.

Sorry I've missed you rdee.

I don't think I can be of any help but I kept telling my dad to quit smoking since I hated it.

He recently quit smoking, after about 40 years of smoking. He quit because he felt alot of pain in his stomach. I can only assume the worse, and I told him to go seek a doctor ASAP. Oh my... the waiting... the hope... the worst of it... I hope it a minor ulcer or something.

I'm sorry about your dad.
That actually does help me because I want to quit smoking for the health benifits and longer, easier life.
Thanks
