In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can married couples who were virgins (and were never even close to sexual contact in any form) all their lives get STDs?

I've read all sorts of horrible STDs that sexually active people

But can non-sexually active people get STDs?

I feel as if this may be a silly question, but I'm curious to know the risks of married couples who are committed to one another and haven't been involved with other people in the past.

Anyone have any input on this? Because the thought of getting a disease for marital union as God sees it is quite scary to me....

If two virgins marry and they stay out of extramarital affairs, then there should no risk of std.

It is theoretically possible to pick something up from motel rooms or public toilets, isn't it?

As far as cold sores go, I've been told that if you kiss another person with a cold sore you can get the herpes virus. I have some friends that have to be careful with this. He gets cold sores, she does not, so, if he has a breakout he is extremely careful to not kiss her or the kids on the mouth. They've been together for 7 yrs. and she's never gotten it, so, it must work.

The only thing i have heard is herpes because of the cold sores on the mouth that you get from having a cold and while you have it have oral sex it changes the strand into the other herpes the gential kind. Which is really possible. Usually when i have cold sores i dont feel like kissing anyone in the first place let alone having oral sex with my husband. Other than that no i dont think you can get any other std

I guess I need some educating of my own.

So let me get this straight...

If I'm a virgin, and I've never done anything sexual, but I get a cold sore on my mouth, I could have an std?
Not exactly.

If you simply have a cold sore (herpes simplex virus) on your mouth, for example, it's not an std, it's just a cold sore.

However, if you then perform oral sex on your wife, the virus could transfer to her genital area. If so, that is where her sores would be. She then has genital herpes, which is an std. And, for that matter, she could then transfer it back to your gentals as well.

They are a virus that transfers by contact. To avoid them don't share drinks or utensils, and don't exchange kisses with someone with mouth sores.

Kids often get them because they tend to be less reserved than grown ups about sharing those things. So, if your kids get mouth sores, avoid kissing their mouths when the sores are present.

Yes it is possible to get an STD without sex, although some are only transmitted by sex. Genital warts is sexual, crabs isn't. Someone I know found out their husband had an affair because he had an STD that is only transmitted through sex.

In the event that a married person gets a STD, to hide it would cause many more problems than facing it.

The herpes virus that causes cold sores is not the same herpes virus that cases genital herpes or chicken pox. There are three herpes viruses. You can get cold sores on any part of your body. It is usually on the lip area, but anywhere where there is a break in the skin it can be transferred to.
If you perform oral sex on your mate they can get cold sores on their privates but it is not genital herpes, it is cold sore virus. It is called like herpes simplex 1 or something. The lesions may appear similar to genital herpes, but they are not the same thing. If you do not believe me, ask a doctor or go look in a health book or do an online search.
Genital herpes is really bad. You can not get it from a cold sore no matter where on your body that you get the cold sore. It does not evolve in to some other virus just because they have a similar name. Chicken pox is also a herpes virus, but it does not turn into genital herpes either.

Mrs. Enigma - you are correct that there are multiple types of herpes virus, and that cold sores are produced by herpes simplex 1. And you are correct that simplex 1 and the virus referred to as "genital herpes" are not the same thing. However, if simplex 1 gets transmitted to the genitals it can also be passed to another's genitalia. Which most assuredly makes it an std at that point - though a different one from the one you referenced.

Whoa some of this is freaky.. Well, I don't even plan to have any extra/premarital affairs. Nor do I ever plan to engage in oral sex. I personally think it's degrading. Regardless, if I'm not involved with either of those, what are the chances of getting STDs?

STDs are by definition transmited sexually - but sex can include just kissing in some circumstances - particularly if both partners have ANY open sores or cuts on or in their mouth.

IF BOTH partners are healthy (i.e. don't have HIV from birth, etc) and have been always totally abstinent AND they have never used drugs and have never had a blood transfusion they are not going to have or transmit STDs because thy won't have any.

The blood supply in the US is extremely safe, but it is not 100% foolproof - but the chances of getting anything from transfused blood is extremely infinitesimal.

These days the loving thing to do is to have a test run at the doctor's before you marry.

Heres another thought to throw out there. I had vaginal thrush and gave it to my husband. He became very upset with me thinking that I had STD. So thrush is one of those things that can be STD related but it doesnt always start as STD
Also, a yeast infection can be giving to your spous.

;) Thrush and Yeast are one in the same ;) and yes - they can be given to your husband, who may have little or no symptoms and then re-infect you - during your treatment (there are good over-the-counter meds avaliable at the pharmacy) for thrush/yeast you should abstain from sex of all kinds and practice very good hygiene - use the medicine EXACTLY as instructed on the box and for the full length of time or you will just create a super-infection and make matters so much worse - if the symptoms last beyond the time treatement is specified on the box contact your MD :)
