Disclaimer: As Christians we aren't exactly in agreement on what being born again means. So if you're going to describe it you may preface it by saying that you are presenting your understanding based on your theological tradition and reading of Scripture; particularly when Catholics, Orthodox, Lutherans, Anglicans and many others, I'm wagering, understand being born again as our common Baptism.

The phrase "born again" literally means "born from above." Trusting in Jesus Christ, the One who paid the penalty of sin when He died on the cross, is what it means to be "born again" spiritually. 1 Peter 1:23: "For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God." Being born again means that God, through His grace and mercy, gives eternal life to all those who believe (2 Corinthians 5:17; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1-4, 18).
John 1:12-13: "Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God."
This passage teaches that being born again means to become a child of God, through faith in Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."
Titus 3:5: "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit."
Ephesians 1:7: "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace."
1 Corinthians 1:30: "It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption."
2 Corinthians 5:21: "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God."
Romans 5:1-2: "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God."
Isaiah 64:6: "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away."
The Bible is very clear that there is nothing we can do ourselves to be saved or to merit our own salvation.
And with all that said, I would also like to point out that our salvation doesn't depend on our feelings either.
Philippians 1:6: "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
Our salvation depends solely on God, because of His love, grace and mercy toward us.
Romans 5:8: "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
I can only speak for myself, but I don't want to read some book by someone who is trying to validate his or her own beliefs or the beliefs of a particular church. Give me a Bible. That's the book I want to compare religious beliefs, practices and teaching with. I'll compare anything related to the Christian faith and practice to the Scriptures (1 Thessalonians 5:21). 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to do our best to present ourselves to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Like I said, give me a Bible. I trust God to lead me to His truth. And I guess this is my own disclaimer when I say that I'm only speaking for myself and not for other people who profess Christ as Savior and Lord.
