  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's perfectly fine. There are plenty of Christians that make 'secular' music. I don't see what the big problem is with listening to something that doesn't talk about Christianity. Believe me, I could speak volumes on this issue, but I won't because I'm still tired from all the threads about this that popped up in the Teens section.

The best thing to do is just use discernment. If you find the lyrics of a particular song to be harmful to you, don't listen to it. 'Secular' music (I really hate that term; just call it music, like it used to be called :sigh: ) is a mixed bag, just like any other type of media, be it books, movies, tv, or even the internet. Some is going to be bad, some is going to be iffy, some is going to be neutral, and some is going to be good or even really good. It's just a matter of finding it.

I think offensive lyrics can be beneficial.

Bingo. This is the main point that I think needs to be made in this debate. It is incredibly important, IMO, to be familiar with people who disagree with you, and to know why they do. It shouldn't be taken as an attack, but as a chance to learn.

"Corruption. The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently."
