  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question on putting sin to death.

1. Jesus died for the sins of the elect past present and future. He took every sin we would ever commit and bore the punishment that the elect deserve so that we don't have to and we could be forgiven.

2. Yes I confess both sins that I know about and those I do not. That's what "forgive us our trespasses" is all about.

3. I take it to mean along the sides of #1.

4. I'm not quite sure what I meant either.

All of the above may be true but the Bible also tells us to put our sin to death. We sin alot less than we did before and at the end of our sanctification we will be totally Holy.

1. When we get back to the foundation of what Paul, for instance, was proclaiming, it's that Jesus is the Christ. What does "Christ" mean or inform us about who and what Jesus is?

2. Figured this, but best to ask. I was teaching 1 John 1 awhile back and had a pastor's wife of 5+/- decades say with a very surprised response, "Is that what that means!? I never knew that!"

3. What's the "time of need" in Hebrews 4:16 in light of the context in 4:15?

4. Smiling...

1. Christ means that Jesus is the messiah doesn't it? He's the messiah that was promised to Adam and Eve after they fell that was supposed to save them and their applicable seed from their sins.

2. Right not everyone who claims to be a Christian realizes that by confessing our sins in genuine repentance cleanses us from sin.

3. I'm actually not sure. I can make a guess but I'd probably be wrong. I'm actually not all that educated on the Bible I only read it occasionally.

1. Christ means that Jesus is the messiah doesn't it? He's the messiah that was promised to Adam and Eve after they fell that was supposed to save them and their seed from their sins.

1. Christ/Messiah:
  • Yes, "Christ" and "Messiah" speak of the same thing and the same person when we're dealing with Jesus. These 2 words are English equivalents of 2 Greek words from the New Covenant writings ("NC") and they point back to a Hebrew word - Moschiach. A couple verses making this somewhat clear:
    • NKJ John 1:41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah " (which is translated, the Christ).
    • NKJ John 4:25 The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming " (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things."
  • Cutting through a lot of instruction these words speak of anointing (you can look "anoint" up in a dictionary). In the Old Covenant Scriptures ("OC"), Prophets, Priests, and Kings were ceremonially anointed.
    • When we go through all the OC it speaks of God's Anointed who would be all 3 - Prophet, Priest & King. This is scratching the surface about who the Messiah would be and what He would do. Parts of the NT go into detail about these things to establish that Jesus is this Messiah.
    • What must be understood about this title - The Christ - is that it is about authority:
      • Read Psalms 2 about the LORD's Anointed (Moschiach - Messiah - Christ). This is a section of Scripture Paul referenced when evangelizing in Acts 13:33
      • NKJ Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
      • NKJ Philippians 2:9-10 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
I need to stop here for a while. But will add a few things before I do:
  • Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3 that the only foundation that can be built upon is Jesus [is the] Christ. The above says just a little about what Christ means and who Jesus is. If we are not believing in Jesus and who He is, and thus bowing in submission and submitted to Him as THE Highest Authority over everything and everyone, then, based upon the Scriptures, I question whether such a one is truly a Christian - whether they have the necessary foundation to proceed.
  • Within this submission to Him, we need to be learning the Word of God. In submission to Him and by His Spirit, we will learn and grow.
  • Part of His role as Savior is to save/deliver His people from their sins. Many miss the full scope of meaning here. It's not just to deliver us from being condemned under sin and death, but for God to work in us, while we work with Him, to increasingly defeat sin in our lives and to live with Him in righteousness, by His standards of righteousness.
  • This is not an easy process, but we should know progress in overcoming sin in our lives to increasing degrees.
  • #3: The reason I pointed you to Hebrews 4:15-16 is because it tells us we can approach Him, as our Great High Priest who knows everything about sin, including what we're personally going through, and find His help in our time of need. Jesus taught that sin is not just overt, but down at the thought level. The moment we find ourselves drifting off into some sinful thought that we are struggling to stop is a time of need. Tell Him you need help. If you keep struggling keep asking. Personally speaking, He has assisted me more times than I can begin to recall, to overcome such thoughts and find my mind off the wrong thinking and on to other things.
  • #2: You're already confessing known sins to Him when you need to. Start getting help earlier. Hebrews 4 is there for a reason. Use Hebrews 4 and 1 John 1 jointly. They were provided for us to use in our walk with God.
  • Salvation is broad in its scope and contains His provision for everything we need to do and become what He has planned for us. He commands us to learn, to grow up, to fight these battles and ultimately to win them. It's not easy, but in abiding faith in Him and who He is and what He's done and is doing for us by His grace and mercy, as Paul also says in Romans 8: who can stand against us!?
  • If you're not learning these things and still struggling to the degree you say with certain things, then something's wrong. Some of it could be covered above. There are some here who I know can help. There are also many who can and will turn all of this into some theological battle over this or that interpretation of Scripture. You get to choose what to listen to.
  • There is also a private messaging system available on this forum. Use it if you need to.
Any questions, please ask.

I have a question about sin and the Bible's commands for us to put sin to death. I've noticed that I get overwhelmed with trying to put all sin to death so, is this something that God takes care of one sin at a time? Like for example I thought I would never break my porn addiction, yet now several years later I've been free of porn completely. Yet, I was addicted to porn since I was 10 years old. Or is putting sin to death really something that we do on our own and it's just a coincidence I broke from a 20+ year sinful habit? I hope my question makes sense.
Jesus Christ of Nazareth put sin to death. He conquered the "second death " on behalf of the elect. Those who believe and are regenerated by His Holy Spirit are His elect. Sin leads to death . Jesus Christ of Nazareth leads us out of it.
Blessings

You are going about trying not to sin totally wrong.

You could not even keep up with all the ways you could sin in the next 60 seconds and they come from every direction, so you cannot defend against all of them.

There are also a ton of good things you could do in the next 60 seconds, but all you have to do is one!

Do just one good thing in the next 60 seconds and you will not have time to sin in the next 60 seconds.

The Spirit within you can actively participate with you in doing good stuff, but what does He do when you’re just trying not to do stuff? The Spirit wants to do stuff and can help guide you, but not trying to do is just quenching a very active Spirit. You still have free will and can quench the Spirit.

More than "actually say," they command us to do so. And obedience to God's commands is a part of Faith, to say the least. Good post.

You might want to revise your number one. Jesus died for and took away the sin of the world everyone past present and future. Sin is not an issue in a person receiving God's free gift of Eternal Life. The Messiah took away the sin barrier.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

Thank you for your replies everyone. I just realized that I need God more than ever before. I need to completely rely on him because without God I am nothing. I am growing each and every day that I'm alive but I still have a very long way to go. In fact, it seems impossible. But with the help of God and other Christians I can grow into what God wants me to be. It makes me really miss Church and want to recover faster so that I can attend Church again. But God has me in this stalemate for a reason. I don't know what it is yet, but I have faith that I will learn it someday. Anyway thanks for your replies again, I cannot grow without you.

Your revision having to do with limited vs. unlimited atonement is noted, but actually He died for both in my reading.

This above statement more than concerns me though. Care to explain it?

I explained it in my other post the only condition given by God to receive His free gift of Eternal Life. Is who is a person placing their faith, belief, trust into. If a person places their faith in The promised Messiah for Eternal life they have received God's free gift of Eternal Life nothing else is required, "by God", from that person.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

There are scriptures that actually say to put sin to death.
I do hope we know that Jesus Christ of Nazareth put sin to death, the Spiritual death. It is our flesh that is weak and we have a helper, the Holy Spirit. In other words, it is the Holy Spirit in us made possible through Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Blessings

Romans 8
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

As long as we don't lose track of our responsibilities in this process, which it seems you're saying.

The Spirit is doing it all and we have nothing to do? Or the Spirit is our helper, is leading and guiding us, and with God's power we do our part to obey what He commands?

Agree, No Holy Spirit, no Salvation.

The Holy Spirit coverts us from death to life. He dwells in us. This is the born again experience. We are still in the flesh and have weaknesses in the flesh. His Holy Spirt guilds us in all truth and conviction. We still have the choice to listen and obey or quench His work in us. I am in agreeance with your second question.

You must be constantly transformed by the "renewal your mind" (Romans 12:2). What does that mean? It means that you must renew and change your thinking, and the way you understand things. You know that porn is a violation of the sixth commandment, because Christ even said that looking at a woman with sexual intent is equivalent to adultery. But, why is that wrong? It is degrading and humiliating to view and treat another human being that way, who was made in the image of God, and those people do these things because they remain dead in their sins. Does this convict you a bit? This is an example of renewing your mind, understanding the root cause of your sin and understanding why it should be rejected. This should be the aim of studying Scripture, that you may constantly renew yourself in the knowledge of God.
