I just was wondering if the role of layman is normatively essential outside of crazy circumstances.

it absolutely is. aside from praying, they like ordained clergy, commune. the participation in the Eucharist is the most important thing we do. this is why we have so many simple, prayerful saints

I remember reading something by Mother Raphaela, the Orthodox abbess, who was very exercised by people wanting to sit through the Divine Liturgy. She was saying that it is the work of all of us, and the laity have no more right to sit through it than does the priest.
