The good thing about Mayr for YEC's is that he is brutally honest about evolution, pointing out exactly where the issues are and presenting the arguments in language LEAST favorable to evolution. Then, he goes on to address those issues. What this does is give YEC's who are so inclined a great source of "quote mining" where they can quote *the issue* and ignore the answer, and then say "see, look, even a leading evolutionist agrees this is a problem!"

He is, unfortunately, an atheist (or seems to be), and this bias does slip in on occassion (but not often), but they are easily filtered by any who agree with the science, but not his philosophical position.

Oh, and I should add that he does add in a small section on abiogenesis, which is not strictly evolution, and which I disagree with. He falls into the trap of saying that the origin of life created a "problem" for Darwinians, when this is not really correct at all. It is only a problem for those particular believers in Darwinian evolutionary theory who ALSO insist that God was not involved in Creation at all. While he presents a cogent argument for how it may have happened, I think that the spark of life came from God.
