• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is one thing I have been dxed with. I am on medication that helps cut the edge on it but when something stressful happens I fall apart and it's like I have to pick up all the pieces again. It's hard and I do pray but having a chemical imbalance isn't easy. Anyone else have PTSD? What's it like for you?

I did. It was really scary. I would have nightmares almost every night and wake up screaming. I would also have flashbacks and feel like I was there again. Definitely wasn't fun. Then I was given Risperdal, and that has really helped with all of my anxiety stuff.

I was diagnosed by the Navy (I was Army in a Navy rehab facility!) in Dec '99 as having PTSD as well as being clinically depressed while I was in a 30 day military rehab facility for alcoholism. Besides the Antibuse, I do not remember what all else they gave me to take. I dont know if they gave me any meds specifically for PTSD or not.

After I got out of rehab and not long after the Army tossed me out in '00, i crawled back into the bottle and stayed there till 2 yrs ago when I crawled back out and got sober.

never went thru counseling for PTSD though I been told I should go. The nearest VA is a ways away from me. But I do go to AA.

PTSD for me has caused HUGE problems... Namely with overreaction. I can't distinguish between a new circumstance and the original trauma. Needless to say it's a treat for the guys I date.
The nightmares and sleeplessness don't help. They just make me more wobbly in reality.
One thing Christian that's helped me is to have trained myself to remember God telling Moses that He's "there beside him" in Genesis.
One thing Secular that's helped me is to quickly on the spot count everything funny that's happened that day. I might not go back to sleep but at least I'm not hiding in the closet with a baseball bat.

Yes, it is hard. I have struggled with depression at times, not the same form as PTSD, but I know people with PTSD, and I know depression is hard. However, God can help you Restore. God can help all of you and already is. The fact that you come here and seek guidance through God's ways shows that.

Several doctors have told me that I have it, although they all think it is from different things. Some think it is from having Lyme disease when I was little, some think it is from having an abusive ex, and some think it is from having a very bad wreck a few years ago, and some think it is from a hospital experience that I had (don't want to talk about it). I've had really bad repeated nightmares about the ex, the wreck, and the time in the hospital. I have lots of issues with driving but I am working on it with therapy. The fear of driving is what is the biggest and most disabling issue in my life.

I haven't had nightmares in a while or anxiety attacks. I don't take any kind of psychiatric medications.

Hello! I have PTSD too. It started from a house fire when I was 14, then my father started to abuse me and it got worse, and it finally became a severe case of PTSD when I was raped a little over a year ago. I get intrusive thoughts through out the day (flashbacks), I get nightmares from time to time as well and there are often things I am afraid of doing because of it all. I'm starting to work through it now. It helps to have a good therapist and people around you who love you and care about you, who you can also talk to about what happened and what is going on now. I just not long ago told my fiance everything about the rape and now I want to and feel ready to tell my therapist everything. It really helps to talk about it with a good support system, and I also have started to talk more about it in my anxiety group but they still don't know everything yet. Just stay strong and we all can get through it! :)

My ptsd stems from sexual and physical abuse from childhood, but I was only diagnosed about a year and a half ago. Because my healing is still an ongoing process, I deal with severe depression, social anxiety, nightmares, panic attacks, and severe low self esteem.

I also have derealization/depersonalization episodes whoch make it very difficult for me to function "normally" on a daily basis. I am on several medications and am on medical welfare because I cannot work, but I am also working with doctors and just started an out-patient hospital program for dealing with severe ptsd.

In one way or another I am affected by my condition but I often cope by distracting myself with things I enjoy like going on the internet and doing artistic stuff, or if need be, just by sleeping. It feels like everyday is an on going battle for me and I often wonder what the point is, but I am also inexplicably stubborn and refuse to give up.

Take care, all. :groupray:
