• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have suffered with severe OCD since childhood. I have been on clomipramine for the last ten years plus. My psychiatrist is wonderful. She is very supportive and helpful. I have a support worker who is also very good. I live on my own so I am glad to see her twice a week.

I have recently had a visit from an Occupational Therapist whom I had discussed with my psych that might be helpful for me coping coping with day to day tasks.

However, I was a bit taken aback with the OT (who I had never ever met before). She said right, I want you to prove to me that you have OCD. I told her that I have had it since childhood; my father had it and my grandfather. And that I was first clinically diagnosed in 1995 and then again in 2005 by two different pyschiartrists. And that I have been on medication for more than ten years. And that I also have a support worker on the reccomendation of my psyc. She said that maybe so, but I want you to prove that you have OCD to me. I told her that if she visited me daily and stayed for an hour or so she could observe me (even though it is stressful for me). She replied that she has not got neither the time nor the resorce to visit me everyday. I thought to myself, well I do not know how else that I am going to 'prove' it to her?

I have never been asked to prove my OCD before. I rang up my psych and she said that she knows nothing about it.

What do you people think?

That is odd. I wouldn't know how to prove to someone I didn't have OCD or did have it either way. I mean I guess you could explain things you do because of it, but that's weird.

Sorry you had such an odd experience.

I saw 11 psychiatrists in 8yrs, before I was led to the one who finally helped me.

Just like the rest of the world...some people are perhaps not as good at their jobs as others. Ask her to prove she's an OT ;) (just kidding). Maybe just ask her to rephrase her question, and that you're not sure what she wants.

That is definitely odd. Ask her why a letter from your psychologist wouldn't work, maybe?

How bizarre! I really don't see why you have to prove anything. Maybe she just wanted you to describe your symptoms and explain how it affects your daily life so she could think of ways to help. If she is demanding proof before she will do anything, then personally I wouldn't waste my time dealing with her. She is supposed to helping you solve problems, not creating new ones.
