I think that the problem is the only reason you can say you believe in the Bible is that is speaks to your soul, the same reason others believe in the Koran or gnostic books. It is circle logic, I believe the Bible is right becuase the Bible says it is right.
Catholics aren't much better, but at least with us it is more of a spiral. If you start with looking at the 4 Gospels as history you hear the story of Jesus who is God and man (it is true this takes a leap of faith) and that He started a visible Church on earth. Then I recognize the Catholic Church as the Church He started, then the Catholic Church tell me that the Gospels, and all of scripture are not just historical books, but the infallible word of God. So even if I did not like.... oh I dunno, the Epistle of James, even if I did not like it I would have to say it is the word of God and free from all error. Because I trust the Church, if I relied on my own heart it might lead me to not believe it because I might not care for it
I accept the canon of books because the church embraced it. NOT because my particular singular denomination did (even if such is the RCC or LDS or my own - which did in 1847).
When the RCC says that the Canon is correct BECAUSE the RCC says it is, that's no different than someone saying that Bigfoot exists because he says Bigfoot does.
But, contrary to the arguments of Catholics, the RCC gets off the "hook." The Canon was developed BEFORE ANY denomination (including that one) did anything. I agree with St. Augustine, my Priest and history that the RCC eventually AFFIRMED the canon, it didn't "create" it. Thus, it is not simply affirming what it itself developed. Only the LDS has that problem. All the rest of us are affirming a Scripture we didn't write, we didn't create, we didn't form. We are all embracing a Rule OUTSIDE of ourselves (in spite of so many Catholics trying very, very hard to put the RCC in the same camp as the LDS on this).
