I hate to burst your bubble and in effect tilt you off your jousting horse but you forgot to mention the probably innumerable number of people that read the OP and decided it was just a stupid question to begin with, and discarded the whole thread as a bad idea meant only to provoke.

It appears to me that from the ratio of those who responded as I requested versus those who posted withoug regard, that the question is not an easy one to answer for many.

In fact some responses indicate to me that answering the question must entail serious consequences or something.

John Chrysotom, He was a reformer who spoke out against the excesses of the Clergy.

Is it not excessively ridiculous to seek the good opinion of those whom you would never wish to be like?

He's also proof that good Christians can hold bad opinions. I just read about his sermons againts the jews.:sigh:

Peace and love to all my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus

I believe that all Protestants have the same faith.
I beleive that all Christians have the same faith.
It's faith in Christ Jesus - the basis of our relationship with Him and with one another as brothers and sisters in Christ.

I don't think that all two billion Christians embrace exactly the same corpus of beliefs, theologies, customs, Traditions or traditions. In fact, I doubt that any two of them do. In fact, I don't even agree with myself on some things.

Luther and Protestantism didn't appear out of a vacuum - there already was a Catholic (Universal) Christian Church. There have always been Christians since the time of Christ. Neither Catholics nor Protestants are in a position to determine who is/isn't a Christian.

THIS THREAD IS RE-OPENING. ONLY DISCUSS THE OP AND THE ADDED COMMENT TO THE OP BY THE MEMBER WHO STARTED THIS THREAD:

To tag onto what was asked in the OP, I would also request that people add a quote from the person they named and state why they consider that person to be a Christain.

newadvent.com (catholic page) and ccel.org (protestant page) both list the ECFs as well as other documents if people need to look something up.

PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD ON TOPIC. IF YOU NEED TO DISCUSS A DIFFERENT ISSUE, PLEASE JOIN ANOTHER THREAD OR START ANOTHER THREAD.

IF THIS THREAD IS DE-RAILED AGAIN, IT WILL BE PERMANENTLY CLOSED.

OK, Thanks to D'Ann for cleaning up this thread.

What about Francis of Assissi? I like the prayer with his name on it.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injure, pardon;
Where there is discord, union;
Where there is doubt, fath;
Where there is dispair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that I receive;
it is in pardoning that I am pardoned;
and it is in dying that I am born to eternal life. AMEN

Also, the Venable Bede of NE England:

And I pray thee, loving Jesus, that as Thou hast graciously given me to drink in with delight the words of Thy knowledge, so Thou wouldst mercifully grant me to attain one day to Thee, the fountain of all wisdom and to appear forever before Thy face.

Name at least one person (more if you want) who you consider to be a Christian who lived at least 300 years before Luther.

John the Baptizer, Philip, Bartholomew, John, James (the son of Alphaeus), Thomas, Matthew, Judas Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, Simon called Peter, Andrew,James (the son of Zebedee), Mary Magdalene, Paul, Matthias.

These are the first, they as Apostles went out and spread the Gospel to many. So, the number of Christians 300 years before Luther cannot be counted. The number of true Christians may have dwindled after the "Heretic hunters" martyred many during the years for not agreeing with the Roman religion. But non- Roman Christianity did not die and there were many who survived who did not follow the religious system of Rome.
Luther, was but one man who disagreed with Rome he by no means was the first, just the one most focused on such as Peter Waldo who protested long before Luther. Sadly, many other martyrs will remain nameless to us until we to join the Father.

Ok, I'm not Protestant, but a former Protestant, and I'll take the challenge by noting Christians of the 13th century (that is, 300 yrs before Luther).

Pope Boniface VIII (r.1294 - 1303)
Pope St. Celestine V (r.1294)

John Baliol, King of Scotland (r.1292 - 1296)
Pope Nicholas IV (r.1288 - 1292)
Margaret of Norway, Queen of Scotland (r.1285 - 1290)
Pope Honorius IV (r.1285 - 1287)

St. Francis of Assisi
St. Thomas Aquinas
St. Dominic

Pax Vobiscum,

John

Actually, here's what I posted:

CaliforniaJosiah said:
Matthew, Mark, John, Paul, Peter...
Mary and Martha in the Bible
St. Clement of Rome
St. Clement of Alexandria
Polycarp
Tertullain
St. Athanasius
St. Augustine
Irenaeus
I'm sure there were millions and millions more...

But, if you are now changing the question from whom we'd consider as Christians to who we "like" then I must withdraw all the names I list. Since I've met none of them, I have no idea if I like them or not.

As to getting snippets of quotes from them, this effort (while a GREAT focus of some Christians) is of tiny value to me. With enough time and skill, one can find excellent snippets from Joseph Smith or Mohammed. Just because we have enough research skills to come up with a nice sounded snippet of a quote only proves our research skill - and little else.

I'm still wondering what is the point of this thread...

:scratch:
