At the moment you were born-again … you were only forgiven of the sins you had committed up to that point in time!

“For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his OLD sins. Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for IF you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
(2 Peter 1:9-11, NKJV)
“OLD sins” is also in the KJV, RSV, NLT, AMP

“having forgotten his purification from his FORMER sins.”
(2 Peter 1:9, NASB) “FORMER sins” is also in the ESV

“forgetting that they have been cleansed from their PAST sins.” (2 Peter 1:9, NIV) “PAST sins” is also in the HCSB

Now for some confirming NT passages …

Paul wrote this to the Corinthian church concerning his words of rebuke in 1 Corinthians that he had sent to them concerning some particular sins. They really needed to be sorrowful and repent.
“… the pain (from his rebuke) caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants His people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way. For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. … worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual (eternal) death.” (2 Corinthians 7:8-10, NLT)

“Yes, I am afraid that when I come again, God will humble me in your presence. And I will be grieved because many of you have not given up your old sins. You have not repented of your impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure.”
(2 Corinthians 12:21, NLT)

Peter is warning believers about God’s destruction of all ungodly and unholy people:
“Then he used the water to destroy the ancient (ungodly) world … the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. …
He is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed (perish spiritually), but (he) wants everyone to repent. … what holy and godly lives you should live … (you) make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight. … I am warning you ahead of time … Be on guard so that you will not be carried away by the errors …”
(2 Peter 3:6-17, NLT)

John gives the condition for the Lord to forgive believers’ present sins:
“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness (unrighteousness).” (1 John 1:9, NLT)
This is an extremely important verse … all men need to be repeatedly purified from all unrighteousness – from all their sins … We must confess our sins and turn from them … We must also confess them with our actions … (John) is talking here about repentance … we must hate our sins and turn from them. This is true repentance.
(The Applied New Testament Commentary; Dr. Thomas Hale)

2 verses later, John reminds believers to ask Jesus to plead our case before the Father:
“My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly right-
eous.” (1 John 2:1, NLT)

Believers are responsible for repenting of their sins after they are born-again! They have been given the Holy Spirit, a totally new nature, and God’s word. So, they have been enabled to be victorious overcomers over sin, the world, and the devil. They have no excuse for failing to do this.

When Jesus made payment for my sins, all of my sins were in the future.
You quoted 1 John 2;1, you should have continued.
And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but the whole world.
Jesus paid our whole debt, not just our past sins.
In Romans 4 and 2 Corinthians 5 it says God does not impute sin to us.
John 1:29 says that Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.
And Jesus isn't getting back up on that cross. All of our sins have been dealt with by Jesus Christ once for all and He gave us eternal redemption. Hebrews 9:12
The reason Peter says that someone has forgotten that they were forgiven of there past sins is because he was talking about those sins that ensnare us. Our future sins aren't the ones that gave us all our problems.

Sorry, Doug, but your going to have to speak to
the warning verses in the OP (instead of ignoring them).
And you're ignoring the lead off verse, 2 Peter 1:9.

Oh I see, you're saying that a person is not saved by faith apart from works, but rather his salvation, which apparently is determined after he dies, is dependent upon his performance. If he commits a sin then if he dies before repenting he goes to hell. So you're saying that faith in Christ doesn't actually save but rather gives a person the potential to be saved if he lives a good enough life.

Yes, the NT warns us in many verses that
salvation is a process ... by which we prove
that we are worthy to be invited into heaven.
None of these spiritual Truths are taught in most churches.
Can you figure out why?

4 times in John 14 alone, Jesus says (I'm paraphrasing):
"Those who love Me obey My commandments."
And I ask you ...
Is anyone invited into heaven who does not love Jesus?
Going one step further ...
Is anyone invited into heaven who does not obey (keep)
Jesus' commandments?

Sorry, Doug, but your going to have to speak to
the warning verses in the OP (instead of ignoring them).
2 Corinthians 7:8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
7:9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
Just because we need to stop sinning does not mean our sins were not paid for by Jesus Christ.
Sin still have some very bad side effects.
Sin can open a door for the devil to do bad things to you.
Sin can ruin your life via addictions.
Sinning will not send a believer to hell. God doesn't impute sin to His children.

2 Corinthians 12:21 And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.

As I said before, sin can do harm to a believer's life.
Families can be wrecked, our witness can be destroyed, the list of what sin can do goes on and on.
The Word of God is clear though, He will not impute sins to a believer. Romans 4:8, 2 Corinthians 5:19-21

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His Word is not in us.
2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you that ye sin not, And if any sin we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous.
2:2 And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, ut also for the whole world.

When a person comes to Christ, the first thing they must do is admit to being a sinner. 1:9
When a person confesses that to God, God cleanses them.
Then John says to his children that they should not sin, and if they do they have an Advocate with the Father.
Note that he does not say refer back to what he just told them. That word for Advocate is parakletos G3875
It is the same word used by Jesus of the Holy Spirit when He calls Him the Comforter.

2 Peter 3:16-17
Believers are never referred to as ungodly or unholy people.

Because heresy should not be taught in churches would be the best reason why.

Scripture must be interpreted by Scripture. If A does not fit with B, but B fits with CDE and F, then you need reassess your interpretation so that A will fit with B.
In other words, works based salvation is a direct contradiction with much of Scripture. However, works as a fruit of salvation meshes perfectly with all.

Salvation is the process of a co-operative effort
between both God and man.
I.E. Man has his part to play in his salvation.

Many dozens of NT verses WARN of the dire
consequences, IF man does NOT do his part
in his covenant with the Lord God.

Scripture teaches we are saved when we entrust ourselves to Jesus, that we are being saved as we work out our salvation, and we have yet to be saved. Depending on the context one or more may apply without the others. However the context of this thread really needs to direct your attention to being born again in Christ, which is a one-time event and is never repeated again. Our old man passes away are we are made a new creation.

OK, Salvation by works. I get it.
Salvation is by faith plus works (James).

The works is co-operation with the Holy Spirit.

"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12).

James did not teach salvation plus works is required. He taught that when you are evaluating someone else, you will see works if they are saved.

Do you mean ...
If you don't do works,
people will see that you're not saved.
Obviously ... no works, no salvation.

If you are a slave to obedience, you get righteousness.

(1 John 1:9) via Jesus' precious blood.
John was writing to believers, right?

Firstly, what I wrote is true. If Jesus only died for past sins, you must live your life under righteousness of obeying the law, for sin is the transgression of the law.
Concerning your quote from Rom6:16 Continue on
I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness

If you are being led into holiness, you are not perfectly holy are you, or you would not being led into holiness, therefore, you still in some way or another commit sin. What does the following mean, please explain it to me
But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a law-breaker. Gal2:17&18

It is linked to your quote

(1 John 1:9)
John was writing to believers, right?
And Paul also said in Romans, "Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness." Rom 4:4,5

As trusting God is in opposition to working for salvation, one must not work to be saved, but rather trust God to save them. That's what I read.

Yes, this is a tough one.
My take on this is ...
There are 2 kinds of works:
(1) obeying Jesus' commandments is work!
(2) helping your fellow man is work!

Matthew 25 destroys my idea that (1) only is necessary.
