The mark of the beast in the bible says it is a number, Rev 13:16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. Don't be alarmed what was said about the shot, I can remember in the 70's when people had on bill boards that they were talking about putting social security numbers on baby when they were born and people were saying that would be the mark of the beast. Isa 26:3 thou will keep him in perfect peace who's mind is stayed on Thee. Do that in all areas of our lives and He will take care of the rest. And remember, Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. 31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? These verses would give you some good assurance in all of life's issues. Good one to memorize and when something troubles you, quote them and thank God that He has everything under control. Notice the Isa 26:3 great peace, Romans 8:28-30 all things work together for good to those who love God, that doesn't mean no tragedies or sorrows, but he will always be with us to keep us in that perfect peace of Isa 26:3 and also Phil 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Focus also on Rom 8:28-30 and notice what I underlined. 28 All things working together for good, 29 for whom He foreknew, He predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son 30 whom He predestined, He called; whom He called, these He also justified, and whom He justified, these He also glorified. Notice whom he foreknew, He predestined, whom He predestined He called, to be conformed to the image of His Son. These are all in the past tense, meaning they have already been set in motion in the believers lives.

I'm going to take the wild guess that when Jesus at the Last Supper took bread and said of it "This is My body" you don't take that literally.

I do. I think that when Jesus says the bread and wine of the Eucharist are His flesh and blood He means it. Why? Because there's no reason to think He meant anything else, and the rest of Scripture backs this up (see 1 Corinthians 10).

But I take a work, written in the apocalyptic style, and which mentions fantastical beasts and monsters and says Jesus has a sword coming out of His mouth and say this isn't supposed to be taken literally and I get accused of "denying the plain words of God".

I'm not even sure how we're supposed to have a serious conversation about Scripture if this is the kind of landscape we are going to inhabit, where plain words of God Incarnate are interpreted to mean whatever we want it to mean, but then take apocalyptic language literally all "Left Behind" style.

The state of the modern Church is a calamity of immense proportions.

Indeed so.
