Well I personally think that if it wasn't idenitfied as a sin in the bible then its fine and i beileve we should all give it to Jesus and think about how he would feel about and pray.

Agreed. Since the passage is talking about adultery, the lusting that is talked about is coveting - desiring to take what belongs to someone else.

I don't understand how just thinking about sex or someone while masturbating is lust. Lust would be the desire to actually go after women (or men). There is a difference between thinking about something and actually planning on pursuing it. I'm pretty sure the creator of sex has had thoughts about sex and even seen people do it. Is He lusting after them?

This really is the truth; I don't believe that God ever puts us in a situation in which we have no choice but to sin - and yet, if being physically attracted to someone is indeed a sin, then those of us with normal sex drives will, inevitably, sin. Not exactly the work of a loving God, from my point of view.

People are made for sex, so masturbation is going to happen if we don't have sex with others (because we are single). It can easily become a problem, but I don't think it is inherently. Problems are when it becomes a focus (I know people who have had problems come into their sexual relationship with their wife because of it, weird thing is that he is the only person I know who didn't touch before having sex with his wife) or when it leads to issues with lust (it is often associated with pornography). I also think that it might lead some who aren't homosexual towards that (and I think that if you aren't genetically homosexual than it is wrong for you to be so).

Be that as it may, I think it is definitely appropriate for sexually active couples, especially if they have to be apart (less sexual frustration means that there will be less temptation to cheat on their partner). I think that it should not be done if it will keep you from satisfying your partner (this is the sin of Onan, which is the only place in the Bible where masturbation is linked to sin, to my knowledge).

Finally, while pornography I think is unhealthy and sinful (especially the pornography that is all over the place online, although even non-nude pictures aren't good if used as pornography), I am not as sure for occasional masturbation to ease sexual desire. I have only known one male past the age of 20 who didn't do it until marriage, so I Think that pretty much everyone does it (I have heard studies that show that it is common among women but less common than among men).

Also, as others have posted, it doesn't solve anything for me. It doesn't make me happier or less lonely, I still want a partner and a mate and sex.

Sorry about the long post, I have thought about this a lot. Not as much about the masturbation side, and off and on for a long long time (over 15 years). Just a note (As mentioned in my blog) I do have a pornography addiction that I am struggling with (and I wouldn't even be able to struggle with it without God acting in my life), so take what I say on this subject with that bias.

I tihnk the sin of lust has to do with fantasing/etc. Finding someone attractive is not lust. Thinking that you want to get to know someone better because they are attractive is not lust.

We definitely can make ourselves weaker to different sins by how we live our lives (and our culture) though. Our current sex focused culture is going to make Lust a hard sin to never commit.

One thing I have heard: There is a chemical that is released in our bodies each time we have sex... that makes us bond with our partner. Problem is that it gets used up... This is meant to be why guys who do the multiple-sleep-around-free-for-all thing struggle to commit eventually.

Well, where this could go wrong is that people can become commited to their hand.

Additionally, anoher area where masturbation can go wrong is that healthy sex should be about giving to your partner. On the other hand, masturbation is selfish (about feeling good yourself), and so encourages unhealthy (receiving, not giving) sexual practices. Not saying that it has to go wrong this way, just saying that it might for some people.

Once more, I am not saying that masturbation is wrong, I think that it isn't. I think it just is easy (especialyl in our culture) for it to be wrong. And I do think that pornography is flat out sinful (even if it is just pictures of pretty people clothed).
