I listen to this podcast regularly:

Survival Podcast

Available through iTunes too, this isn't your "lone wolf with gas mask & AR" sort of podcast but a community based podcast that speaks to all sorts of prepping, homesteading, and general preparedness. Frankly not much talk about guns or "tactical" stuff; mostly a lot about gardening and storing and beekeeping and aquaponics and info about national/international issues. I've been listening for about a year and always intrigued with new information. Language can be a bit salty at times but overall highly recommended for the prepper crowd.

Thanks for the link. I doubt that doomsday stuff and a lot of gunfire will be the norm in most cases. I think you hit the nail on the head when you speak of day to day survival and having the ability to live off of the grid.

Wow! I've seen this stuff on tv... a show called "Doomsday Preppers" very interesting! I think everyone should partake. Better safe than sorry!

Would the solar powered radio be effected by an EMP strike?

I agree -- hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

I don't know a lot about solar radios but I have a crank radio that works pretty well. I don't know if it would be affected by an EMP strike though. I'll have to look into that.

I also have a short wave/AM/FM radio that will plug into my vehicle cigarette lighter and run off of the 12V battery.

The solar powered radio is only useful if radio transmitters are still working.

Good point. I have a CB radio that I have yet to hook up. If need be, I might be able to communicate with other folks in the general area should it become necessary.

Yeah Spirko speaks often that things like losing a job or a weather event will be where one's preps will mostly be used, not as dramatic or romantic as a nuclear war or zombie invasion but rubber-hit-the-road reality..and he has little patience for stuff like the Doomsday Preppers show (I've not seen it but heard about it)..but he doesn't discount larger events, particularly economic.

I think the fact that my mom and dad lived in poverty through the Great Depression instilled in me the need to prepare for difficult times. Both of them shared stories of day to day survival during that rough time. My mom's family fled to Southern California during the time of the Midwestern Dust Bowl and my dad's parents and family eked out a living on a fig ranch in Central California. They all learned how to can their own food and to basically live off of the land. My dad's family used an out-house; hunted deer and pheasant; and lived a pretty rough life. They grew, dried, packaged, and delivered figs to local grocers.

I do watch Doomsday Preppers but not because of the hype or the far-fetched scenarios. However, I've picked up a few good ideas by watching. Probably the most important "prep" that I never feel that I have an over-abundance of is water. It's cheap to collect but probably the most important substance on earth and probably the substance that most folks are lacking.

I remember reading on a survival blog some years back how most people, when faced with a survival-type situation, will seek out food first, then shelter, then water. Which the author said was unfortunate, given water should be a far higher priority than food and possibly higher than shelter.

Which reminds me -- I need to get some more water. :D

Looks to be a pretty interesting movie. Here's Part 1 in a Youtube clip:

I'd die before turning to cannibalism.

I did a quick Google search about what the Bible says about cannibalism. There are plenty of references in the Old Testament. I couldn't find any references in the NT.

I read an account some time ago about a band of settlers crossing the Rockies and meeting hardships. From what I recall the men ate those who had died but the women didn't.

the "Donner Party"- there is another film called "Alive" that is based on actual events about a group of world class athletes in 1972 who survived a plane crash in the mountains that you might find interesting.

One of my favorite hobbies is "prepping." That is to say that I enjoy preparing for unforeseen disasters; possible economic collapse; foreign invasion; terrorist activity; or something as simple as unemployment. Although I place my full trust in God I believe that God wants us to use our talents and wisdom in times of trial, trouble, or tribulation.

My wife and I stock up on food, water, and other resources as time and money permits. Our vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies. I used to belong to a "survivalist" forum (several actually) where prepping and survivalism was extensively discussed. My goal is to be able to live off of "the grid" if that ever becomes necessary.

Has anyone else considered preparing for hard and difficult times?

You sound just like my dad. He's a survivalist, he's been buying us cans of food to live off of in case a disaster strikes.

May sound creepy but I have this book in my library:

1942099-M.jpg

...for informational purposes only..no I don't think I would eat "long pig"..

I know that some folks have resorted to it but I've put myself in that scenario (mentally) many times and I just can't see myself taking that path. I'd turn to God in faith that He would provide some other source of "food" before resorting to cannibalism. From a Christian perspective, the body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit (even though the flesh is corrupt). But who knows ... folks take extreme measures in desperate times.
