The fact that they want "their" team to lose? No. Just because a team is filled with people who carry the same passport as you, doesn't mean that you should support them in every thing that they do.

The fact that they think that God should concern Himself with such mundane matters as football matches? Eh... For whatever reason, plenty of prayers remain unanswered, or answered with "no". If that's because God has a quota of wishes that He fulfills per week, then adding something trivial like this to the queue is just a bit unfair to the woman who's praying for her sick daughter's survival. If it's because God only handles extremely serious or important prayers from True Believers, then isn't a bit arrogant to think that such a trivial thing is more important than all the other stuff that God refuses to do? If it's because God just does what He planned all along, and prayers can't make a difference to His actions... then why bother praying for something to happen?

Btw, is this an hypothetical or something that actually happened? If the latter: my guess is the priest just doesn't like football, and you won't hear him complain when the USA is going nuts about their handegg competition.

If Christians shouldn't be focusing on it, why is the priest concerned with the winner at all?

Yeah, the Telegraaf is slightly twisting this man's message in order to make for a better story.

His basic message was: don't watch football. Or at least, don't participate in the hype surrounding it. But refraining from participating is hard. And for that reason, it might be better if we're quickly eliminated, thus removing the temptation.

There is a priest that has called upon his flock and fellow believers to pray to god to make their team lose as soon as possible in the soccer world cup.
His justifcation is that entertainment is not something a true christian should focus on.

So.. Is it ethical?

If this priest is French, then yes.

I don't know about praying, but I was certainly hoping England would lose against Slovenia and not go through to the final 16. Not because I object to entertainment, but because I can't find any entertainment in staring at some blokes kicking a bit of leather about for an hour and a half. Not a value judgement, just a personal thing. The only interesting thing I've found is what it says about nationalism, and what the Prime Minister flying the England flag over Downing Street says about the Union. I fully accept that the majority of people would find the Constitutional arrangements of the UK as boring as I find the World Cup. ^_^

I don't have an ideological objection, though. I thought this was bloody pathetic, and that's coming from a socialist who hates football. I can understand the argument that we shouldn't focus on entertainment because it's a distraction and we should focus on what we think is really important (religion, socialism, whatever-ism, family, etc...). But that doesn't take into account the fact that we're human. No-one can dedicate every waking minute to any one thing, no matter how passionately they believe in it. It would be boring and exhausting. If this pastor can honestly say he never does/reads/watches anything not related to his chosen ideology, then good for him...though I'd be concerned for his sanity.

My local has produced a TV out of nowhere; the people in the flat upstairs started watching it loudly. Nowhere is safe from this tedium. Actually, it's only half an hour on the train to Wales...I could lay low in Swansea for a bit. :p

I'm sure England will lose to Germany, anyway, and I can safely go outside again.

What i wonder though, since this is essentially a testable prayer. Does that mean god will act the same way he did last time we tested prayer and do the exact opposite of what was prayed for?

There's a great moment, you may have seen it, in a 3rd rock from the sun episode. They're praying for their team to win, and the other team is also praying for themselves to win.

"Is our god stronger than theirs then?"
"Don't be stupid, there's only one god."
