Long story short. Wife's colleague admitted to beating her autistic son (he's 15). My wife used to be a teacher and worked with autistic children, wasn't sure if she should report her to children's services since she's not a mandated reporter anymore. We figured we'll stay out of it unless it becomes a habit. She beat him again, this time over something trivial. Wife called it in, she was afraid her colleague won't be her friend anymore if she finds out. We hoped she would not, or if CPS investigates it they won't just haul her away and put the kid in foster care, but try to help them.
This morning, her colleague found and she's furious at my wife. My wife's upset and regrets calling, thinking she shouldn't have gotten involved. I'm trying to assure her that we discussed it was possible she'd lose a friend, but beating on her autistic kid (or any kid) is definitely not OK!
Praying for my wife that she can realize that calling it in was the right thing, praying for her colleague that she will get some help and not lose her boy, and praying for the boy that his mom won't beat on him.
