Prayers are now a form of insult?

I wouldn't use a movie as an example. A movie is merely the opinions and imagination of the screen writer. But you do bring up a point, and that point is addressed by James:

Jas 2:14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?

Jas 2:15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,

Jas 2:16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?

Jas 2:17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

So merely offering prayers for someone but refusing to tend to their needs does little good.

It is too easy to ignore people in need. Jesus praised the actions of a Samaritan who thought he was supposed to help the victim of violent crime. Actions speak louder than words.

When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, 34 came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the host, and said to him, ‘Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.’ 36 Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?”

37 He said, “He who showed mercy on him.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
