Ok,
I really felt like we needed a good thread on how our tounge (words) can affect people.

I know, this is only one scripture, i'm working on more. It says in proverbs 18: 21, "DEATH and LIFE are in the power of the TONGUE, And those who love it will eat it's fruit".
You can release authority by the words you speak! You can change your environment and shape your FUTURE!! It's all in the words you speak.
What people don't realize is what power we have in our words! You can heal, you can curse, you can bless, and you can speak Gods truth into someones life!

I want to make this clear that when you say to someone, "your stupid and your fat", that is putting a curse on that person. If you say, "i hate my mom", that is putting a curse on them.

This is a very interesting subject, i would encourage you to start studying it, and learn more about the power we have in our words.
Well, anyway, thats all i have for now.

God bless!

Agreed ablikespaintball! :)

But sometimes, nothing seems to happen when we speak, say, healing over the sick.

I believe it has something to do with the fact that we usu don't honour our words. eg we tell our kids we'll take them to the zoo next week, but come next week, we make excuses. Or, we tell a friend we'll call him back, but never do pick up the phone to call until days later.

Then we want immediate results when we say "Be healed in Jesus' name!"

Anyway, just to add another scripture to your post:

1Pe 3:10
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

"evil" here does not just mean vulgarity and sex jokes, it means speaking doubt. eg: God called the reports of the 10 spies who doubted "evil".

Yes, I completely agree! Positive speaking brings about positive results. Negative words bring about negative results, and it can opress and bind people when someone is constantly telling them they are no good, or they are stupid. :sigh:

I'm reminded of the scripute in James (it goes something like this-off the top of my head)Can a fountain bring forth sweet water and bitter? These things ought not to be so.
Hmm maybe I should look it up just to be sure it's correct!
James 3:10-13
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet [water] and bitter?
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so [can] no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

Let me share a little bit on this because my wife and I have been WOF for many years now...

We believe in correct confession of the word of God. That means we take sides with what God says... even when it does not appear to be true. We also believe (in accordance with the words of Jesus) that if we believe we receive what we say then we have whatsoever we say. (Mark 11:22-24)

Three months ago we were visiting the barrier islands of SC. One such island is Fripp island which is halfway between Charleston and Savannah. The island is a privately owned gated community where land and houses are regularly sold in the 1 million to 5 million dollar range. A seaside lot is now being advertised for 1 million(no house... just the land). It is not unusual for a house to rent for 125,000 a month. This is a very prosperous area.
We were out visiting some friends on the island, and needless to say it is a very beautiful place. Being right on the beach, it has jungle/tropical flora (the Viet Nam scenes in Forest Gump were shot on Fripp Isand... Tom Hanks rented a house on the beach for 32000 a month).
Anyways.. .on the way out, we were crossing the access bridge and my wife just said (she spoke... she said words) "It would really be nice to live out here." I responded "Yes, it is very beautiful, isolated, and quiet." She is a book editor, and works at home. I am a computer programmer and also do a lot of work at home. Needless to say, the island would be very conducive to working at home. Besides this, the rent at the apartment we were staying at had increased a hundred bucks over a year's time... and we wanted out and were looking.

Now down through the years I have learned to sense what words are spirit spoken. A spirit spoken word is a word that was believed in the heart and vocalized. The words we spoke on the bridge that day were spirit spoken. They we spontaneous... they flowed... and they had power in them. I knew right there and then that we had what we said. I had no idea how it was going to come to pass, nor did I make any effort to make it come to pass (the wife and I make pretty good money... but nowhere near the figures I quoted above!!!) And so we pretty much forgot about it.

Several weeks later I get a call from a man who is now the pastor of the Episcopalian church were I was baptized, confirmed, and raised in back in upstate NY(my mother has a stained glass window dedicated to her in the church). I had never met the guy. I had been back to my hometown twice in the last 33 years. The last time I was there I snapped a picture of the old church building. We have a personal web site and I posted this picture on it. Anyway, he had found the picture of the church and because he just happened to be from the lowcountry of SC, he wanted to talk. I tell him I live in the lowcountry of SC and comment offhand that we are looking for somewhere else to stay. He tells me he just happens to own some property out on an island called "Fripp island"!!!!... the very place we had visited and spoken faith words concerning. He is delighted to hear that we are looking, and offers it to us for less than what we were paying at the apartments.
Less than three weeks after the faith words were spoken a phone call came literally out of the blue and we are on the island. We are within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, and live on the third fairway of a golf course (I do not play golf...)
It just happened.... we did not beg, pray, or make any effort to get there. We just did what the scripture describes... we spoke words and believed that we had what we said. And we got it. It is just that simple.

I feel sorry for people who do not know how to walk in the spirit and by faith.... they miss so much of the
joy and wonder in life He that has for them!

Even some Christian Psychologists are finally recognizing the fact that our words have power and can have an effect on us and others. I have been reading (off and on) a book by Dr. David Stoop titled You are What You Think. In the book, he describes what he calls Self-Talk and goes through many Scripture and makes many points. Though he does this from a clinical aspect, it does reconfirm what the Faith Teachers have been saying for decades now.

I know that this doesn't sound very Spiritual, and it isn't even in the bible. I have had the habit for a long time now, when someone says, "How are you?" I automatically say without thinking, "Healthy as a horse", LOL. It must be true, because I am 53 years old, I'm a bowler, and I can bowl 20+ games back to back without falling over from exhaustion. It may not be biblical as far as scripture goes, but it is a positve confession that I firmly believe in. God has a sense of humor, since I believe that He gave me those words.

Frankly this kind of talk scares me. It sounds more like divination found in pagan religions than true Biblical religion.

Moreover the scripture you listed does not talk about the Christians ability to "release" blessings or curses upon anyone. This is a conclusion that can only be made by inference.

Quite simply, what it means is that with the tongue is powerful. Nowhere in the general context do we see anything that tells us that we can "relese" any spiritual power upon anyone.

Moreover, the burden of proof is not on me. It is on the person who cited it to prove it conforms to his/her interpretation as I was not the one who listed it. Proof-texting is a heinous thing indeed, and it's cheap.

No, this is totally different from divinition because we are tapping into God's power, not satan's.

Also, it's not us who cause the blessings' it's speaking positive words God gave us and when we line our speach up with what God is saying it is by God's power that blessings are released to us. Speaking negative words, opens the door to satan to work in a person's life when they say bad things and actually believe the negative things they say, it's the reverse of having faith for positive things. Speaking positive things moves God and speaking negative things moves the devil.

Can you show me this in scripture? It sounds more like something a psychologist or Robert Schuller would say. Can you show me where it says that says that blessings come through the affirmation of God's will and not Him working all things out after the counsel of His own will? If this is the case, can God's will be thwarted? All very important questions that must be answered.

Moreover does faith actually make things happen? Do I have the same creative power God has by making negative/positive things happen by merely speaking it and thereby releasing power?

This all sounds dangerous to me. :sigh:

First of all, it doesn't necessarily have to be by spiritual power, even psychologists recognize the power of positive or negative thinking in a person's life. Worldly psychologists will even say that telling a kid or someone they are dumb, stupid, ugly etc constantly will have a negative affect on their psyche. So even without looking at it from a spiritual perspective, people can put others in mental bondage. Anyone in an abusive relationship are put under bondage.

Also, when a Christian does speak positive words in someone's life, and the person has faith and it lines up with God's word, spiritual power is released in their life. What do you think praying and laying hands on someone is all about? :) We do it everytime we pray for someone. ;)

You've made the mistake of assuming that agreeing with someone in prayer and invoking God is the same thing as using or faith to make things happen.

I don't care if psychologists agree with WOF teaching. We're not talking about something you'd see on Dr. Phil, we're talking about theology.

Hmmmm...not exactly sure what you are trying to say. God does work things out after the counsel of His own will, that's why I said that when we say what God says, when our words line up with God's words God's blessings are released in our life. We are not saying what we want, it's when our speach lines up with what God wants for us.

If this is the case, can God's will be thwarted? All very important questions that must be answered.

God's will can be hindered by someone not having enough faith for what He wants to do for us, or by someone not obeying God's word, or by someone falling into sin and or disobedience. People can and do hinder God's blessings for them all the time unfortunately. All of us have at one time or another hindered something that God may have been trying to do for us or through us or with us, even if we were not aware of it. If God tells someone that they are healed and the person keep saying that they will never get better, guess what? They hinder the blessings God has for them.

Moreover does faith actually make things happen?

Yes, God is moved by faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Read Hebrews chapter 11. It tells all of things God did in their life through their faith.

Do I have the same creative power God has by making negative/positive things happen by merely speaking it and thereby releasing power?

It is not by our power that things happen. When we speak positive things, we move God to perform in our lives, when we speak negative things satan is moved to hinder us. It is not by our power, it is simply what we say that can have spiritual results good or bad, and yes everyone's including your words will either move God or satan. Do you pray? Prayer is just speaking and asking God for things, your words to God and your faith will move God to perform, it's the same thing. Speaking by faith is like prayer not put in a question form but put as a statement. When the guy spoke and said he wished they could live in a nice place like that and his wife was in agreement, it was like two agreeing in prayer, but not in the form of a request, in a form of a statement.

It depends on what you say! Speaking negative words hinders the flow of blessings and opens the door to the devil.

We should all strive to give God total control in all situations in our life.
