Possible ET?

One of the "let downs" of ET searches in astronomy is the lack of Dyson spheres around stars. If they exist we should be able to find them with IR telescopes, but none are seen. Kind of disappointing . . . or exciting because we could be the first intelligent species to build one in our corner of the universe.

well how would we see them? Even if they were detectable by IR telsecopes we would have to look for them in blank space as they would block the light from the sun. Unless something I've missed. Other then the deep field image, we generally look where we know something is, as opposed to nothing we know of.

Well this is still awesomely mysterious. I'm waiting for some decently powerful telescopes pointed at it to figure something out.

While I don't seriously think its aliens (just really wish it was), I don't understand why people put such a low possibility on technological intelligence. We've never seen evidence for a star capturing a comet swarm and dumping it on a neighbouring star but we have seen an intelligence race with some space travel.

Well it's best to get rid of all the natural explanations before going to aliens or such I hope it is, but heard some testing has shown negative, but I will say what ever it is, a mega structure or something else it will be exciting.

One issue I think has been brought up is right now best we can tell is that there is something there with odd signals, to get beyond that we would need to build a giant telscope to pick anything up. Thats even asuming if it is aliens, they use any comunication means we could tell, after all if FTL comunications is possible what chance would we have to do anything but maybe tell there was a signal

Trouble is any advanced Alien race would have got rid of radio signals, just two slow as a form of interstellar communication so i am not sure how seti could communicate with any Alien Intelligence that be responsible for this mega structure.

I agree that radio is unsuitable for interstellar comms, but what do you think they'd use instead of radio?

I don't know. Aliens know we are here anyway, have done for thousands of years. This so called mega structure is in our own milky way galaxy. If it is Alien and nothing natural then these ET's would know we are here. It's also amazing that we are not even alone in our own Galaxy.

If you mean possible alien life on KIC 8462852 (the 'mystery' star), it's about 1,480 light years away. They might know there's life on Earth from the atmospheric composition, but they won't know about us - our radio won't reach them for another 1,300-odd years.

But the 'alien megastructure' idea is highly speculative, a hit with the PR dept. and the popular media, but it's only there because the variations haven't been explained yet. This kind of thing happens quite often, and can take some time to resolve. The people involved in the research are more reserved about it:

"... these mystery transit events are nowhere near "proof" of an alien civilization. In fact, it's barely evidence..."

"... researchers have been keen to stress that this "alien megastructure" scenario is quite unlikely."​

It's early days to be getting out the 'Greetings From Earth' flags.

I don't know. We could build a house and garden, but have no idea that a family of mice had moved into a tree just outside the wall.

It's a very strange system to be the only dyson swarm in the region of space, so it seems like a bizarre natural explanation is more likely then Aliens.

They will know about us, they most likely have interstellar travel. Aliens have been vistiting earth for thousands of years, i don't see why any advanced race around this star would not have visited earth or at least its solar system at some point.

Earths past. Many religious and ancient texts are littered with possible Alien visits.

Actually no, although i have heard of the man.

I have been involved in my own research for many years now because i am determined to learn the truth.

We are all being lied to about the existence of Alien life in the universe.

NASA, Governments, the church etc are all involved in a mass deception to deceive the public about Alien life.

If Aliens have been visiting us in the 20th century then its highly likely they may have visited earth before that.

However, I've never seen evidence that I found in any way convincing.

If we posit that faster then light travel and communication is possible then we could have aliens visiting Earth. But compared to the age of the universe the entirety of human existence is pretty limited.

By 'people like me' I presume you mean atheists, because you don't know much more about me than that. Seems like rather a sweeping generalization... and I always thought the popular media were quite keen to publish that kind of thing.

But anyhow, I can't say I recall seeing anything significant recently, let alone dismissing it. I did spend some time a few years back looking into the more popular reports - Roswell, Rendlesham, Eglin AFB, Tehran 1976, the Phoenix lights, some of the NASA mission films, etc.

I'm curious - can you post some links to what you feel is the best recent evidence you know of?

It's not a good candidate star system for a species to develop in, so it isn't a good candidate for a species' first Dyson Swarm. If it's not their first we'd seed more of them in nearby space.

As to why I wish out was true? It would be evidenced that we are just not alone in the universe, but that more advanced technology and civilizations are out there and one day our descendants could meet.

You seem to be operating under the assumption that they would be benign. What if it ends up being more War of the Worlds rather than Star Trek?
